evaluating a rear main seal job... what else?

Evaluating doing a rear main seal job.

Have read through all the threads that come up in search. Given the labor involved seems like its worth doing the full rear main seal (077103171N) vs the Timken 716102 + 077103181H gasket, but i can definitely appreciate the tradeoff.

Am aware that there's a slight chance it's not the rear main seal but we're pretty sure it is.

Have a very very slight leak from the trans pan gasket which is an obvious given the trans has to come out.

If I go to that length, what else should I be prepared to do at the same time?

Here's the rundown of everything already done to the car (905341) if anyone wants more context:

Looks like all the typical trans-out work has already been done on that car. I'd just say that you should have a spare set of flexplate bolts on hand since they tend to be destroyed in the removal process. I would also tend to agree on the rear main replacement. The factory piece seems to usually be good for 100k+, so worth the investment to go with known quality.

    Thanks much GreggPDX.

Any chance you / anyone has the part number handy for the flexplate bolts? My google-fu is failing me.

I don't have the numbers for those, sorry. Might try ECS Tuning and see if they list it.

If I remember right that is correct. There are two bolts per flange (3 flanges) on the Torque Converter.

I was thinking of the flexplate-to-crank bolts, not torque converter-to-flexplate.

There are 10 of those, and you can see them here: https://www.rs6.com/showthread.php/3...l=1#post292715

Thanks all. Really appreciate all the assistance from everyone.

Have officially decided to turn this into an engine out job to just make sure it all gets done right and we get any and all leaks.

i was going to try to hold off on the engine out for a while since the timing belt should have been serviced all recently... as in this year / maybe 10k-20kmi maximum. but now I'm contemplating doing all that again just since we'll be in there...

have been using this thread (which seems to be the most comprehensive) as guide for what to replace (plus obviously anything that needs it)

I mean.. I'm just throwing this out there.

I went to replace my Bufkin Pipe, that was it... I had to remove the engine to get to it due to stripped bolts and part of my "while I'm in there" lead me to do a manual conversion on the car.

    Be careful...

    Holy crap!!

I'd bet you could make enough parting it out to cover paying someone labor to do it! Why would you do that to me right before Christmas?
