I am adding something new. It began last night. I started the car and noticed a rough idle. Left for the store and realized I had no brake assist and idle was up to 2000 rpm. I have done no troubleshooting so far, but assume it is the brake booster. The brake pedal makes a smooshy noise and I have to exert a lot of force to stop the car.

Weigh in if you have ideas. I probably won't get to fixing it until the weekend, so parked she shall remain.
Check all the vacuum lines for possible leaks. You should be able to hear a leaking line with the engine running. In the old days prior to fancy sensors, you could easily locate a vacuum leak by spraying some ether or quick start around the engine. When the idle sped up, you found your leak. Don't do that here as you can quickly ruin a quality sensor, but do check for leaks prior to automatically arriving at a defuctive part that costs $$$.

As for rerouting the hoses, you can only look to do this if you are also looking to modify the manner in which your air cleaner assembly mounts on top....

I did this with the suction jet pump but it was kind of hard to hear over my engine whirring and Milltek downpipes dumping out a cacophony of sound at 3000 rpms.

Hey Greg.....I am just finishing this fun project on my Beast. My advice would be to take a ton of pics as you are disassembling...... you will need them! I also replaced the coolant after run pump and PCV valve as long as I had the manifold off. I would recommend that as well......trust me you only want to do this job once! I think total parts bill was about $250 (most of that was the after run pump).

DMB. There is definitely a large suction sound from under the intake manifold and it revs if a mist of starting fluid is placed down there. Looks like she'll be getting torn down after I finish my deck and backyard makeover. So another week or 2.

Bigz. I wish I had read your post before I did it. Hopefully it didn't hurt anything. I only sprayed a little. ;-/

Brav. It was your thread that helped me do my troubleshooting. Thank you for getting all of that data onto the forum.

Bill. I think we bought our cars right at the point everything falls apart..... I'll look into the after run pump too. I'm probably going to order it all some time next week.

I'm confused about the after run coolant pump. Why is that being mentioned during this job? Isn't it located on the driver side frame rail nowhere near the intake manifold?

Nope....that is the solenoid for the circuit. The pump itself is under the manifold (see pic below).

This car is full of surprises. Do you happen to have the part number?

I dont have it but I may mention it in that thread.. I bought the relocation kit but just used the pump out of it. Doesn't relocate for RS6.. at least not with the stock Audi kit

Not exactly sure as I had the parts guy order it at the shop that I am working at. Below is VagCat info.....it is number 1 on the illustration so that is probably the part number.

News update. I replaced the vacuum device after a month of getting my backyard project on track. No sooner than that I sprung a power steering leak that cost me another 3 hours to sort out.
The next day I got the windows tinted. That same day the starter started acting up. Something new every day. At least the mileage is staying down.

I swear to you guys, I am following procedures!

I have been continuing to write on this post to keep my car project continuity. At what point should I just start a new thread?

My research leads me to believe I have a sticking bendix assembly.

This is obviously not my car, but it what it sounds like.

This is an article from a porsche guy that has a very similar description to his problem. Looks like it is coming out.

    Steve,
My initial thoughts are that I'm going to have to at least go to service position to get to the top bolt. Do you agree?

I don't think so, but I can verify this. I'm not going to be able to get under my car until tomorrow morning, but I can see how accessible it is. I've got everything but the belly pan and sway bar on currently.

I took some videos, but I'm finding it hard to get the microphone to easily hear it. To the plain ear it is very obvious. Don't pay attention to my squeaky belt bearing or gauge warnings, they go away after a little bit.

Man Greg.....I can relate! Did my SJP and after run pump.....then a bad MAF......then a bad N75......and now.....front passenger DRC strut hose has a hole in it. Keep your head up!! I keep telling myself that I am never getting rid of this car (first car I have ever said that about) so it is all an investment. By the way....after replacing the after run pump (supposedly as a preventative measure) I realized that the original one wasn't working. I now hear it doing it's job every time I shut the car off.
