Torque Converter and or Transmission failures related to production dates and VIN's

We have been scattering a few data points on the wall lately and the theory is holding some water.

Early VIN(early prod date) = early failure of TC and or transmission.

Late VIN(later prod date or 2004's in europe) = longer life of both the TC and transmission.

So lets see if we can pin down the approx build date and or VIN sequence that the cars all of a sudden started holding the TC to a normal lifespan of say 100k.

My guess is somewhere between 905400 and 905500 and build dates around Aug 03 which would have been 2004's in other countries than the USA.

In Europe we can compare results by the production dates. I took a quick glance over on RS246.com and pistonheads and noticed that the 04 RS6 owners dont seem to be having TC problems. Where the 03 owners all have the problem and early at that.

So, if you know your cars early history then post up the VIN/build date and report if any TC/trans work has been done and when. You may post the VIN as 90546x but put the build date on the post. I will poke around RS246.com and ask for input over there as well. These were all built on the same assembly line and if the TC was updated it would cover all RS6s from a particular build date.

mine was 900218, production date July, 2003 registered as a 2004 and driven from 2006 onwards as until then it sat in the showroom. TC was replaced when the car was 86k miles. Same story for both my friends with RS6, production date also July 2003, TC went bad within the range of 70-80k miles, or at least that is when it was noticed as the cars here didn't come with the check engine light, so unless the symptoms are that obvious you can only tell using the vcds, and we all found out using vcds, otherwise they drove perfectly well.

another one we checked had 60k miles on it, same production date, and again if we wouldn't have plugged in the vagcom the owner had no idea that something was wrong with it and he was the GM of VW Middle East and the car has always been maintained by Audi Middle East, now that might say something about the quality of their technicians...
    Ex.: 2004 Audi RS6 C5 ABT, Milltek non-resonated, 19" RS4 B7 rims, RNS-E - SOLD
    2004 AUdi RS6 C5, SE exhaust, RNS-E, 19' original rims - SOLD
Now :2009 Audi RS6 C6 - stock yet pretty fast

The TC and Trans are original with no problems thus far. Car runs like a "Beast"!!

You just purchased from a Indy dealer this year. Do you have first hand knowledge of service from new?

904362, has 92k miles and in the shop right now for the TC, and maybe the trans. Have we thought about joining the class action lawsuit that is being brought against audi for bad transmissions? http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2013...approval/?_r=0

There is nothing to join. It's done and a different transmission.

Water under the bridge on the rs6. US cars are 9 to 10 yrs old at this point.

Do you have early records on your car? Another car you just purchased. Right

Eh, it doesn't hurt to try, I was pretty successful with the gas tank . https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ There are two safety complaints already filed.

904438 and I believe the transmission failed between 80k-90k miles.

I just got a new TC and Transmission, 118k miles. Does anyone know if a newer unit from Audi will last longer?

Trans has always been the same, just tc with early seal problems. I believe you're tuned, so proceed with some caution. I put an upgraded/rebuilt trans in the grave after 8 months. Driving habits and power make a world of difference.

#5035, TC went at 80k, trans went at 92k.

My bet is trans would have last longer if TC had been changed right away, and I'm also putting 100+ more torque than stock into it, disintegrated the clutch plates.

#5207 here, at 100K miles now with a code-free transmission. I will post the build date when I get out to the storage garage it is in. Not sure of any transmission work previously (I guess I can find out from the selling dealer). I know the second owner , I'm the third, and all he did at 78K was the T-belt then I came in at 84K. I do know the first owner had the MTM TCU put in along with the ECU early on...knock on burl that things remain strong in there.
