Several days ago there was statement from Mgmbh about these cars, and they were saying how those aren't M cars... bla, bla, bla...

What worries me more is why Audi isn't first with some high performance diesel quattro car!

You mean like the Q7 V12 TDI, it has the performance of the proposed X6 M50d or whatever it will be called, or are you talking about a sedan? Before Audi introduced the twin turbo V6 TDI A6 the magazines were calling it the S6 TDI. Certainly this will be quicker than the closest Audi version but performance wise it will be around what the 550i is.

I don't want to count Q7 V12 TDI in that its just to heavy and to big!
A6 3.0 TTDI has arrived now, while BMW have 535d (3.0l biturbo) for some eight years now!
Current 535d, F10, is at same level as that new A6 with 3.0 twin turbo diesel, both having 313 hp.
550d will be in totally another league, much higher!

Q7 V12 6.0 twin turbo TDI, I bet they sold about 5, I know of one putting out about 1200nm. BMW have come to the market with a much more useful and appealing engine so I would agree BMW are the ones leading the way with diesel, with Audi lagging behind.
Current: V10 RS 6 Saloon, 420mm Ceramics, MRC, Milltek, MTM bits, Audi exclusive bits - 757BHP/967NM
Past: V8 RS 6 plus, Sprint Blue, 126 of 999

    Dear Friends,

the idea of a multiple charged Diesel engine is not a pioneer idea. I remember Mercedes had a concept car back in 2005, the Mercedes SLK 320 CDI, with a Triturbo Diesel Engine. For those who are interested, Press Release 2005:

    Diesel 72º V6
    Location Front, longitudinally mounted
    Displacement 2.987 liter / 182.3 cu in
    Bore / Stroke 83.0 mm (3.3 in) / 92.0 mm (3.6 in)
Valvetrain 3 valves / cylinder, SOHC
    Fuel feed Direct Fuel Injection
    Aspiration Tri-Turbo
    Power 286 bhp / 213 KW
    Torque 630 Nm / 465 ft lbs
    BHP/Liter 96 bhp / liter
    Top Speed 250 km/h (155 mph) |limited|
    0-60 mph 5.2 s
    0-1000m 24.7s

"The SLK 320 CDI tri-Turbo is based on the new V6 diesel engine, which achieves new levels of performance thanks to a two-stage supercharging system. It consists of three Turbochargers, of which two are located on the outside next to the cylinder banks while the larger third Turbocharger is situated between the V of the cylinders. At low engine speeds and loads, air flows through all three Turbochargers (i.e., large and small), with the small Turbochargers doing most of the work. When engine speed increases and the flow is continuous, the large Turbocharger takes over supplying the greatest share of the charge pressure and the smaller Turbochargers are turned off by means of a bypass system. At high engine speeds and loads, only the large Turbocharger is running. Performance is further heightened as a result of an enlarged intercooler and larger pipe diameters for the charge air and the exhaust."

Well this was 2005 and made it never into production due to cost factors.

Back to the new BMW Triturbo Engine:

A masterpiece of engineering is my personal sincere opinion and my respect to BMW for having the courage not just to release the engine but to support it as well. As i can imagine it will be a pain to service not talking about reliability.

Lets wait and see how it turns out in real life... this will be the first serious so called "Sport Diesel Engine" ont the market but for sure not the last.

At the moment I can't think of a reason why they don't but maybe they have their reasons. Maybe when the engine has been out there in the hands of the public we will have our reason. I'm concerned as to how complex it is.
Hanging the tail out is Vanity

Officialy presented M performance 50d powered cars... I'm so courious what will be Audis/VAGs answer to this engine! 4.2 TDI doesn't seems like a proper rival...

"Tri-turbo'' realy means it has three turbines, two smaller and one bigger....

    3.0l, R6 tri-turbo - 381 hp, 740 Nm
