Torque Converter triple square / XZN size? Engine Pics available.

Anyone know the size of the Triple Square / XZN size for the T.C. bolts? I have a 10mm which fits a touch loose so I'm wondering if it is 11mm, which I don't have. I would really, really, really hate to strip one of these.

On another thread. Does anyone need any high resolution pics of the engine from any angle while it's out?Attachment 11385

I guess I'm kind of nervous on the cleanliness. My valve covers have never leaked but I'm going to go ahead and change the gaskets anyways. I hope I don't jinx myselft. Thanks Yokurst, I'll take another look and make sure they are Torx and not Triple Squares.

Mine aren't triple square. Just standard torx.

I can let you know for sure tonight, but it's an odd size for sure.

    I want to say it's a T55 or T57?

Thanks Tozo & Steve & Yokurst. bilko1, in my case I removed the whole front end and dropped the engine/tranny out the bottom, straight down. The water pipes on the sides are more oval, slab sided to make clearance to drop it out the bottom.

looks as though the Y pipe has to come off in order to fit through the subframe?

Yes, the Y pipe does need to be removed, a good time to install a new O-ring in there anyways, I think the O-ring was $3.70 at Genuine, why can't the O-ring seals for the Maf be that price. The only thing holding my Y-pipe on was the two bolts to the throttle body. The two mounting bolts lower and to the sides were missing. Must thank the dealer (Continental Audi) for leaving those out when the did the 35K service while the car was still on warranty.

Just so you guys don't think I'm off my rocker?

So, here you go. T-55 without really looking at it wouldn't fit so I shined a light in there and the bolts are definitely a Triple Square. And I was under the assumption that there would be 3 spaced 120' apart but there are a total of 6 of these babies, and it appears they are factory original with the little yellow pen or locktite marks on them. Of course it is one size larger than what I have. Ready for the S.A. comments with that statement. Here is a pic for evidence since on this list evidence is worth a thousand "I'm sure's".

As my old Indian boss would say, "I stand collected"

You could have had your TC replaced ans they used new bolts? I've already spec'd out the banjo bolts for the turbo oil and cooling that originally were allen head and now are superseded by triple square. That's why I'm thinking a revision, maybe?

Mine looked like OEM with the little yellow strip on them so who knows. Mine is a late build '03 so maybe they were changed in production or whatever the guys over at the Quattro house had in stock at the time. Or....Hans & Franz were drinking my favorite Dunkel Hefeweizen that day.

Yea, that is what these are, but of course my Triple Square set only goes to 10mm so I had to order a new set. Seems like you are finding them more and more common on VAG & Porsche products.
