    Hello, new to the forum, but not Audis

    I just put a deposit down on a Daytona Gray RS6. I am pretty excited, yet I'm not 100% sure I am making the right choice. As a repair shop owner, I can handle most any repairs, but the miles aren't what you'd call low..

    The car has 72,300 on the clock. Body is good, although the front bumper had some peeling due to a poor repaint.The dealer has agreed to fix it. Clean title and carfax, one owner. DRC was replaced in August of this year.

    I am an Audi specialist, but I've never worked on a RS6. I don't understand why I'd need to change the timing belt so often on the 4.2TT versus the standard 4.2 NA. Can anyone explain the reasoning there?

    Anyway, the car is pretty darn clean, other than the plastic on the inner door handles peeling a bit, and a line of pixels on the radio is out. The peeling plastic looks like hell, but otherwise the car is tight.

    As I looked under the car on a lift, I noticed an oil leak coming from around the passenger side front axle, where it goes into the trans. I couldn't tell in short order whether or not is was the valvecover or the transmission itself,as the oil was clean, although the dealer said that he would fix that as well.

    I am paying 23,000 for the car. What do you guys think?

    welcome. frankly, I don't necessarily agree with swapping out the timing belt so often, but it is a high stress item I guess.

    anyway, welcome to the boards.

    Price and condition are hand in hand. Its a good price if the car is clean.

    You could buy a car with 1/2 the miles for just a few k more but then again if 23k is your budget this is a good start.

    Timing belt is 35k due to the increased power output and heat production of the TT engine. Plain and simple

    ya, see, you think that but i saw someone who had his timing belt serviced and the damned thing looked brand new.

    Someone posted on here before that an owner with close to 200k miles never had his belt changed! That is very extreme, but it just makes me wonder how many miles you can actually go without having it done. Maybe 60k? I don't like guessing such things on a rather pricey motor.

    right, I'm totally not saying don't follow the prescribed service timelines or that what dave said isn't true but providing an anecdote of having seen a timing belt service that wasn't really "necessary"...

    Half the miles, true. There is one in NY for 30K with 39K on the clock, but it has two accidents reported and the guy seems a little shady. It's very easy to turn back the clock on Audis if you have a VAG, as long as the DMV records don't conflict. I don't trust many small independent dealers from NJ

    As far as the timing belt.. Take the 2.7 TT. That engine produces plenty of heat, but the TB interval is 90K. That would seem to be a contradiction, since the NA 2.8 is also 90-110K interval. The 4.2 NA is 90-110K Additional power does not really put additional stress on the belt , although, additional cylinders would, due to more driven valve components.

    I guess what I'm really concerned with is the mileage, but this car was from Fla for the first 4 years, and Mass. for the last two. 39 for the first 4 years, and 33k in the last two, with a car seat in the back. I don't think its been beat on.

    I am hoping that this car has another 70K in it . I will be getting an extended warranty, although, probably one that I sell, like Penn Warranty or such...not Fidelity.

    Funny i should read this, I just test drove a Daytona Gray RS6 with 74k miles on that still hasn't had it's timing belt replaced. The dealer wasn't an Audi dealer but mentioned the timing belt needed to be replaced every 35k also but my local audi dealer said at 75k they should be replaced, though the service manager admittedly never worked on an RS6 (as a matter of fact he wanted to see one so bad he offered me a discount on any services it would need).

    The car is very clean and has a clear history, i have a print out of all service records from Audi and it looks good. I am still a little concerned about the higher mileage though. Also the 3rd party warranty company my credit union uses refuses to cover the RS6 regardless of mileage. I was going to look into Fidelity unless someone else has any other suggestions?

    For whatever it's worth, my 2.7T A6 had 105k and I never had the timing belt replaced and had no major issues with it.

    $25,995 with just under 75K miles. Awesome car . I would have bought it, but I don't think I could have afforded to maintain it.

    It was really tight and has a clean service record, the DRC was just serviced and they are putting new tires on it this week. The car barely showed it's miles although there were some small things, like the bolster on the drivers seat and the drivers interior door handle was noticeably warn. Other than that it ran and handled great.

    The timing belt really needs to be replaced however. If i can work out a way to get that replaced I'd be interested. But for the moment I'm still shopping around for one that has had a timing belt replaced in the last 35k miles.
