Some reports are saying 620 horsepower V10, so I'm guessing the RS6 V10. Which should be the engine.

A8L, 5 inches longer than the A8 and comes with the expected 500 horsepower 6.3 liter W12. This probably means that the S8 will have less than 500 horsepower. Still hoping for the RS6 engine though.

The likelihood of V10 TT in S8 is becoming remote ,a V8 TT is coming and as you said,with less then 500hp.
I love Audis but I am not going to buy an inferior car,don't understand why they choose to be always (mostly) the second best?
A8 W12 is supposed to compete against S600 and 760,a new model with sub par performance next to them.....

A8L will have enormous torque while weighing less than the old car and probably getting better MPG's. The S8 will have an engine comparable to the S6's as has been the case in the past- with maybe a bit more power. for this reason i believe the new V8 is going to be TT and not SC. easier to tune up and down a TT imo. note- it will also weigh less than the old S8 while making more torque. so it will be overall a better car. if it makes 480 hp and 430 of torque i will be happy while netting close to 30 mpg. i am not sure who would buy a 650 hp S8 or RS8- i mean come on. even bmw leaves that to a semi-official second entity- alpina.
the new V8 is going to be huge for audi because it is going to define its existence as a car co. in those segments for the next 10 years, no doubt. it will likely be offered in versions ranging from 400 to 500+ hp.

Yeah I understand the prestige of the W12 but since Audi wants to be the top luxury manufacturer why not actually play with the big boys in terms of power, i mean they have a TT W12 and a TT V10 and all they do is pick the 6.3 490 hp engine. I doubt the buyers of Audi A8 cross shop with the Bentley Flying Spur so the internal competition shouldn't be an issue, on the other hand i believe the buyers of top of the range luxury sedans want prestige and power both .. why go for a marque's top dog if it's bite is way less than the competition's ?
Brand building is simple, be the best at various areas and be loud about it: best technology, most power, best handling, most luxury features and most responsive to the general market trend. If you want to knock S-Klasse and 7 series of their pedestals you'd better come armed to the teeth.

good points. i also believe that post when i read it. the 4.0T will be a perfect replacement for the aging 4.2FSI- which currently only makes 380 in top form. i doubt audi will have both that AND the 420 engine, so away goes the NA 4.2- as it has in the Q7. that means the S8 will have the 500 hp (or so) 4.0T engine.
