    Question RS6 hood vents

    Dear All!

I think climate goes hotter, so I need to cool my beast.
Cheapest and safest way is to cut vents in the hood.

Can anybody pls tell me their experience with that, maybe some photos of MTM ones or other solution.

    thanks
    Peace All

I just ordered a second hood from ebay.de and when i gets here i'll start a hood vent mod. Will take pics along the way and should have a detailed post on the experience in a few months.
Important things to consider - water control if your car is sitting in the rain. Some may say it would be o.k.. i like to minimize risk.

Also you weaken the structure of the hood when it is cut. It is said it may fold up enough to unlatch and blow back at speed. I would definately recomend hood pins as part of the hood vent mod.

I have been looking at alot of hood vent pics - champion racing etc. I would go with vents in the location they used as i'm sure they did all the testing for the best location to draw heat. Also if you remove the liner inside the hood (very easy to do) you will see existing bracing that you may want to avoid cutting. This will affect the position of any vents but i think that still puts you in the best position.

Give me a month or two and i'll post my work / results.

Oh yeah... some cutting tips... tape off the hood with a good amount of painters tape around the cut area to avoid ripping up the hood. I have heard a jigsaw works well.
remember that as you cut (grinder or saw) that metal particles will be falling into the engine bay. Either remove the hood or cover the bay with a sheet or tarp to catch the crap - save the motor.
I would cut slightly smaller and file up to fit... just my preference.

    enjoy.

    Question

I heard MTM was testing their vents solution in wind tunnel and they got 10 deg lower oil temp.

    Anyone has that solution ?

Why get one from ebay.de? Frieght ought to be very expensive, and last I check cost on a new one was less than 500 bucks.

This is correct. 10 degrees Celsius is the minimun gain on oli temperature. It is more as you go faster ! ! !

I know one french car which has the MTM solution. The customer should provide me feedback in the near futur.

But if you look at all the sport cars currently available, They all have 'holes' in the hood to extract the heat. From the Ferrari F599, to the Aston Martin, and the Corvette, and so on....

The Audi RS6 Engine if it was propery cooled will be 20% more powerfull. But like its ancestor the RS2, the engine bay is becoming an heat bath very quickly.

I was picking up a set of Recaro's and the hood kinda got thrown into the deal - so shipping was already covered. I'm surprised that i could have got one for $500 new. - good to know.
Still i think i made out o.k and seats will be sick... U.S seats kill my back with all the body movement in the corners.

    some vent pics

Herea a few different hood vent styles to give ya some ideas. Remember the bracing under the hood is a factor on placement / size. I'm still waiting on my hood to arrive... could be another month or so ...

    aghhhhh.. i hate the waiting!

Can you post the link form Germany Ebay where you order the hood? Have you consider to mount the MTM vent on the hood? That will be easier and straight foward without lots of consideration, they may already considered. Just follow the installation guide!

Scottmandu said that the hood from the dealer was less than $500 bucks. That sounds like a great price without the hassel of getting it shipped and dealing with someone you don't know. I had to translate alot of german to get the deal i did. Anyway.. just keep looking on www.ebay.de if you really want to go that way - RS6 stuff. You should see i hood come up sometime... or if the seller is moving other parts like bumpers / seats etc. Just ask him.. he will probably have a hood or can get one.. thats how i got mine with the seats.
But try the dealer first.. and let me know what they say. Remember my stuff isn't here yet and may never turn up... it's a risk.

The MTM vents would be easy your right... maybe under mount without the lip around them. But i have a style in mind that i like and it's fun to see if i can pull it off so everyone on board approves. Then maybe i'll rebuild the front bumper.... Big plans there hee, hee!!
    Good luck.

I like the ones on the M6 or the RS6 best - the MTM ones don't do it for me. The ones on the RS6 would be better if the vents were aligned with the side to side line of the car, not on the slant that they are (make sense?)

The hood vents from Aston Martin are also very good. Same for the ones from Ford Escort Cosworth...

    Check the link below:

This is the hood vents I did on my Sport Quattro, exactly like it was 20 years ago. This is also very very efficient as it was used in Groupe B Rallye. And the grill are made from material for fire place, exactly like it was done at Audi Sport. Impossible to be cheaper...

Impossible? I don't know... my way seems cheaper. But your way definately has a more polished look.
