    Arrow Only 15 per day...

    From the press release:

    The craftsmanship

The Audi R8 is being built on a small-lot production line in a specially constructed new block at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. The entire production process – from the bodyshell construction to final assembly – is organised in the same way as a craft workshop. Small teams of specialists accompany every step of production, subjecting every part and component to intense scrutiny. This ensures that every one of the maximum of 15 cars per day built will more than match the customary high quality standards of the Audi product range.

    Production limit

The 5000 car production limit is more out of necessity than desire. Since Quattro is assembling the cars, and they have a limited number of staff and lines, the 15 per day x 1 year is approximately 5000 cars. They will phase out the RS4 in probably a year, (the new B8 models will be out) and that will leave capacity for the new RS6/RS7. In addition, Audi is expanding the RS line, supposedly to have a TT-RS, which may or may not be assembled there as well. The problem Audi has is that they cannot build the RS models on their usual lines, unlike Mercedes or BMW who produce their high end sport models on the regular line. I know for a fact that the plant in Ingolfing (BMW) that makes the 5,6, and 7 series, also produces the M5 and M6. They have a capacity of 500 cars per day, and can produce any of the models that they need or have sold. They only allocate a small percentage to the M cars, but that is to keep the brand value up as well. Audi needs to expand the factory at Neckarsulm (Quattro GMBH) so that they can keep up with the increasing model range and demand for their special cars.
