I hear it when driving slowly over bumps or just turning the wheel - in quiet place like garage or quiet parking lot. It's quite noticable but the mechanics can't hear it (most are deaf I guess). My wife, kid, parents, friends and the family dog can hear it.

I don't think its the famous loose powerstearing rack as it does not happen if the car is not moving and the wheel it turned either way lock to lock. Only when moving over rises or uneven pavement.

Dear Mike,

you might hear a clicking coming from the Brake Calipers. This clicking occurs when you turn the steering wheel over ~45° either left or right. You will notice it clicking twice if turning the steering wheel from left to right and back while driving slowly. If this is what you hear, dont worry, it is normal based on the front brake set-up.

could that happen even if the brakes are not being applied?

Yes, you will notice the clicking without breaking force.

Mike - does this clicking clearly come from outside the passenger compartment? Mine has always clicked (really faint sound, more curious than annoying) in low speed maneuvering while turning the steering wheel. But the sound seems to come from somewhere in the steering column region...

That is what i am talking about. If you step on the brake pedal softly, while turning the steering wheel, the clicking wont appear. It comes from the caliper/pistons .

Good one to know cause sometimes I hear it while backing out of my driveway and start to turn the wheel...however my car is dropped and it might be my wheel hitting the inner wheel liner...

I have been hearing this noise since the car was new, the first time it was warm enough out to drive with the windows down, so after the first 3 months I'd guess. No real change, but when I posted this question a year or so ago, I got the sound of Crickets in the background with no response LOL.

Thanks for the input.

The clicking in my car is not changed by applying the brakes. So I am not sure of it's origins, but paranoid that it may be getting loader!

Don't have time for a dealer visit...

Oh well, I am sure the actual cause will come to light...

Anyone solved this mystery as I have the same noise (creaking when turning the wheel even when stopped) which seems to come and go?
Would be grateful as have a puzzled audi mechanic working on it:mech: .

Thanks

James. That sounds more like the steering rack than the brakes. Have your guy check the bolts that hold it in place. If not that, then we have a mystery I guess!

Dear James,

you might want to let your Tech check the Headset linkage and Steering- Rack. If too much grease spray was used for hollow cavity sealing etc. around these points leads to your described issue.

YES YES YES !!

I have had some sleepless nights over this trying to investigate / research this. I'm glad that there are others that may have experienced this and my car isn't going to fall apart. (Haven't had a chance to take it to the dealer yet, though I am scheduled to do so).

Here is a post I made to another forum but got no replies:

You are right, its better described as a clicking noise and it comes from passenger side when I reverse (in most cases) ever so slowly with my steering turned right (near full lock). I actually heard it again yesterday when I braked hard last night to test the brakes on a straight. But then I don't hear it. It seems to be more audible when the car is warm and has been driven.

But yes, it has me spooked so far.

Otherwise the car is GREAT !

Qisha - your post (August 16th) describes it perfectly .:0: . really no need to worry ?

I've had it looked at today but it is still guess work at the moment. However, I have noticed that the noise is more audible after the car has been driven a little bit and brakes applied - so something seems to warm up and expand!?<O:p</O:p

The mechanic seems to suggest the possibility of the brakes too. (Qisha's suggestion)<O:p</O:p

Anyone else experience this ? I'm trying to get an idea of how common (if at all) this is and if anyone has fixed a similar problem.

Many investigations and many £'s later the saga continues ...The latest diagnosis by an Audi speciailist suggests that there is a 'possible' fault with the drive shaft joint. However my vehicle will need to be rebooked for 'further' investigations. !!!

Warranty at the moment want nothing to do with me as these investigations are simply not covered, so I'm having to foot the bill. I don't mind as long as we get to the fault !

I just wanted to know how this latest diagnosis sat with the mechanically minded amongst you ?

Please do excuse my ignorance, but is this the same as a possible tracking rod end problem ? (suggested by another specialist and some mates from the forums?) ...

Do let me have your views.... PLEASE :-)

PS: Thanks to those who have already given me some suggestions.
