View Full Version : 17125 - Torque Converter Clutch: Stuck OFF / No Power being transferred

So this weekend I was traveling, and the check engine light came on. Luckily I had my computer with me and my VAG tool, so I proceeded to check out what the heck happened.

Here is the log output from VAG:

Control Module Part Number: 4D1 907 558 D
Component and/or Version: 4.2l V8/5VT G 0003
Software Coding: 0006752
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
18032 - MIL Request Signal Active (Check TCM for errors too!)
P1624 - 008 - Implausible Signal

Control Module Part Number: 4B0 927 156 FL
Component and/or Version: AG5 01L 4.2l5VT USA 0305
Software Coding: 0000002
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
17125 - Torque Converter Clutch: Stuck OFF / No Power being transferred
P0741 - 003 - Mechanical Failure - Intermittent

I was close to home so I did not feel extremely bad, yet concerned for obvious reasons. Saved the fault codes to a file, and cleared them. Car was still running fine. Unable to find any audible noises that may contribute to any damage, so I kept moving towards the garage. About to enter the garage, and the light came on again.

Parked the car and VAG'd the car once again. Same set of codes. This time I did not clear it, so I could bring it to the dealership with it on. Car has been pretty reliable and trouble free for the past 2+ years.

Left car in the shop this morning, and explained the situation. Just got a call from my Audi service department, and they ordered a new torque converter. Seems it will have to be replaced. For anyone wondering, the car's ECU and TCU are stock.
Will keep everyone posted.

Nene, I was thinking about picking one of those up myself. They seem handy to have.

Glad that your RS 6 was stock (so no hassle from dealer) and am curious to see what gives? Too bad you can't replace torque converter with one from Stasis(25/75%)!:D :thumb:

thus, mine stay stock ....

only change...all doors unlock with one push of the button and the doors auto lock at 10mph.

Ice-Link is hardly a mod!

But bad bad me, my snow tires were too tall....correct size numbers but too tall and hell, they photographed them double spank me...

the mechanic has one leg longer than the other...

What's the big deal? Did they rub? Afraid of wheel bearing damage due to more weight? Only 'think' obvious is the odometer will show a wee bit less miles for the actual distance you've travelled.

Aronis

They are compairing a very worn summer tire to a newish winter tire.

The tire markings are the same 255/40 18inch. but the occasional rubbing is due to the offset difference in the wheel. The winter rims are an offset of 20mm and the summer stock rims are 30 mm.

The problem is that I told them the car is bottoming out VERY frequently, much more so than last winter when the tires were even TALLER (LESS WORN). Now the car is stable, but bottoms out very frequently on relatively mild bumps.

I am waiting until the summer tires are on, then I'll drive a few more 100 miles and then perhaps bring up the issue.

I want to see if it bottoms out with the summer tires (rubs, what ever) so I can stick those pictures up their collective asses.

I did some hard driving this past few days and the friggen car side skips if I hit a bump at 45 while turning...noticably. Perhaps some of that is the snow tires not being as sticky as the summer rubber, but my best recollection is that the winter tires were not that bad.....that is when the system was normal.

Got a call from my dealer today, and service rep mentioned that the engine is out, and they are in the process of doing the torque converter. Since it required this much work, they are going to do the 35K mile service (I'm at 32K right now) as well. The 35K mile service is pretty extensive, which requires bumper removal and such, so it's best to get it all done with.

Let's hope that I won't have to take the engine out again at 60K for another torque converter.

Really? The front bumper has to come off for the 35K service?!? That ain't gonna be too cheap once "free" maintenance is up!

As for the TC, it certainly better not go bad again at 60K! but then if it does... Stasis!:thumb:

One reason it's expensive is that maintenance requirements include replacing the timing belt at 35K. Audi picks up the tab at 35K, but it's the owner's dime at 75K. Check your maintenance booklet to confirm. Will cost about $1200 if I recall correctly, even for owners with an extended warranty, which covers repairs but not required maintenance.:(And owners must do that maintenance to maintain the warranty.

You gotta replace a timing belt at 35K!!!!:MTM:

Dang, my commuter Accord is at 157K and the services guys keep threatening me, "Its gona go, any day now"!:D

Wow, 35K, that needs to sink in...

Ben,
Check the service maintenance booklet. The 35K service is quite extensive, mechanically! I guess it pales in comparison to having the engine taken out for a torque converter replacement.
I thought all you had to do was to drop the tranny and do it. My mistake I guess.

I remember the Level10 guys saying that for the S4 all you had to do was drop the tranny. Maybe I'm royally confused about it all.

That's just so crazy that a timing belt is changed at 35K! I mean, I've expected something like that from a Ferrari, but for an Audi (even as special as the :addict: ), it just seems so crazy. Man, that's high maintenance!

I would think that the RS6 timing belt is probably fine until 80K miles. However, think about, for Audi, it is probably cheaper to replace that part than having to replace a whole motor if it goes before the maintenance schedule's up.

She's a high maintenance gal! Dang it I miss her so much.
I have so many presents for her at home...waiting and waiting.

My 35 k service included:
Oil Filter
Oil
Filterelement
J Tooth Belt
C roller
E roller
E Lever
Filter
AC Spark Plug
Beltdampter
Washer
B Repair Kit
FuelFilter
Clip
A Gasket
Seal
Washer
Loosened and fasten lock carrier

NO MENTION OF A TIMING BELT.

THe J-Tooth Belt ????? Perhaps that is the Timing Belt?

There was no mention of taking the front bumper off, but that process appears pretty easy and COMMON on Audi's as I saw a 1.8 T being worked on with the bumper off and an A6 2.7 Turbo also with the front bumper cover off.

ALso taking the time to read the report I saw that the "Level Sensor Corroded Badly" Replaced sensor etc.

C/S There is a blue fluid Leaking Under Bumper --- leaking valve - replace headlinght washer pressure cylinder and valve.....

Boy once the warrantee is over.....urg that stuff is going to be expensive....

c'mon guys ... wanna dance? Gotta pay the music .....

Just feel sorry for us on the other side of the pond one in a while ......, fuel runs between $6-8 per gallon, on average trip the best fuel consumption would be around 10 mpg, every time you go the the stealer you feel like you're paying for the car over and over again, no 3-4 years of free maintenance servces, car cost alone is 40% more ....

damn, I better get off the soapbox .... :incar:

Welll, the service representative has been great at keeping me updated. Calls me about every 2 days, and if I don't answer, he leaves a message.

So far the torque converter replacement is done, and engine is back in its place. He agreed that doing the 35K mile service certainly was a good call. To be fair, he had mentioned to me when I first brought in the car, and I had chosen to bring it in for that service another time. He insisted on it when he subsequently called, to inform me the engine was coming out.

The tech had called in sick today, so he'll be back to it come Monday. I think by mid next week it may be back in my hands. Good thing I have other cars to drive. I passed on the loaner.

I love one, but I'd only do it if I were definitely buying the car at lease end. it's looking quite doubtful at this point.

Thanks.....

Call from the tech today pinpoints car being ready tomorrow for pickup. I'll be going by to take a look at her tomorrow anyhow, as I have to drop something off. We'll see whether she's ready or not.

On a separate note, went to the local Jaguar dealership and test drove the new XK. I'll be replacing my current 2004 leased convertible for a brand new 2007 XK convertible. Picking it up by next Wednesday, once the tech comes by to inspect the lease I currently hold. Car is much nicer inside, extremely better handling, strong on power and tranny, and exhaust note is much sexier (kind of like RS6). Pix to follow once I pick her up, and just in time for the Summer too.

So the babe is back home, which she was sorely missed. Overall experience from the whole service was top notch. Enjoyed getting the calls every 2-3 days, just to keep me up to date. It would have been faster, however Mike (the mechanic) had some classes to attend, and I liked the fact they did not wish to put someone else to finish the job. The guy that started the work, finished it. She sounds/rides/feels fantastic.

Here is the short list from the 35K mile service:

Owners manual shows I'll need this at 75K. I'm guessing that's a $2,500 job!!! So not cheap! Did the dealer by any chance give you a estimate for what that would cost at 75K?
