Have you seen the Top Gear episode about rally cars??? I'm interested in which rally cars people like, so let's discuss which is the best rally car ever made on earth!I think the best is Ford RS 2000. I'm waiting for your opinions. So::argue:

And personally I think so too.. No other rally car is faster than this

If an S1, a group B car, isn't 'interesting' (especially in it's time)... well then I don't know what else you could come up with. The S1 simply redefined rally-sport.

It was so fast they had to ban it. Even today, I think it would make it hard for the ralley cars to keep up. It changed the rallye scene. So yes, it's interesting. It's history.

And your asking about the best rally car. The best rally car is the fastest. Otherwise you had to ask which the greatest rally car is.

If you're looking for history, look no further than the Audi ralley cars. They were also the first to have a woman driver win a ralley!

And yes, after some horrible accidents, Audi voluntarily left the scene that their car redefined!

They were actually band. All the Group B cars (Audi was the one, who everyone tried to follow). This is what they say in the 25 years of quattro documentary. I wasn't there myself, so I could be mistold.
And your right about the woman. And offcourse the accidents. That was the big reason for the banning/leaving.

What is the definition of the "best" rally car ?

I think that the best car is, which has win the most manufacturers championships, as this is sport and winner is the best:

1. Lancia Delta Integrale 1987-1992, six times in the row !

In shared 2-6 place with three wins for each are:

Lancia Stratos 1974-1976
Fiat 131 Abarth 1977, 1978, 1980
Impreza 1995-1997
Peugeot 206 2000-2002
Xsara 2003-2005

Sure, all those cars are great, but Integrale was unbeatable for six years, so I consider this is the best rally car ever.

The biggest impression to me has made Lancia Delta S4. Probably because, when B group was banned, this was the fastest car out there and sure winner. But then Toivonen crashed and the rest is history well known.

Quattro/S1 was great car, but it's just because this was the first 4wd car, competing against 2wd. It's handling was flawed even in latest short wheelbase form and when Peugeot joined the game, Audi had no chance.

I see all of you has forgot about the Mini, what has won Monte Carlo rally three times and was not as fast as Audi S1 or Lancia Stratos...:bye:

So what,, The audi Quattro came in 1980.. and then is was competing in rally.. everyone were laughing because a car with AWD was to heavy and couldn't win.. after the first rally no one was laughing anymore :) And after that the Quattros just got faster and faster.. ! And I think It won most rallys.. It did very well in pikes peak too :revs:
So i cant come up with any better rally car, but Lancia Stratos is really cool..

BTW OTT.. I see u have written the years of manufacturers wins.. But the funny is that u havent time time between 1980 and 1987 (when the AUDI'S was in the race, AND WON) But u got every other year..-

alex, I wrote the names of the cars, which have the most manufacturer title wins. Audi got two, so thats why it's not on the list. Don't get me wrong, Audi was at the time quickest car out there, just it's time on the top was shorter than for some others. And the reason was like I said, with it's front biased weight distribution it was not competitive against more developed cars like Peugeot and other mid-engined cars. This has been said by Audi pilots and crew chief in their interviews. I have been following the rally racing over 20 years, since B-group era. One of my favourite sports.

The S1 had more power than any other rally car in history, reaching over 600 horsepower in 1986, and it had huge wings to aid with traction on faster stages. Faced with ever-increasing competition, the S1 only managed a single victory, on the San Remo rally in 1985.

One rally win is not much, if we are speaking about S1 as the best rally car ever. BTW. I read from somewhere, that Gumpert Apollo is loosely based on Audi S-Group rally car prototype. Pitty we didn't see those monsters in action.

The S1 is the Pikes Peak hill climb car right? Anyway, yes the Quattro was a defining point in rally racing, but as others have said, competing teams jumped on the bandwagon and soon produces more modern and faster cars that were successful for longer periods of time.
