According to this week's Autocar, the new TT is a clever mix of steel and aluminium. The magazine reports that Audi has found a way to bond steel and aluminium. I don't know how true this is, because such science is the Holy Grail of metallurgy. Given that steel has a great torsional rigidity than aluminium, it appears that the core chassis will utilise an adapted Golf V platform made out of steel but with aluminium for the suspension, transmission tunnel, body panels and other non-load bearing components.

:vhmmm:

Maybe they've re-invented the bolt. :)

Or perhaps a resin/glue like the Elise uses.

The mix might even be lighter than a full aluminium chassis. The 2006 Elise has a new set of steel pedals that are lighter than the aluminium ones, b/c the steel allows them to use less material.
KORO engineering uses steel cylinder sleeves on their large displacement 911s for the same reason.

Very interesting report.
