First of all, we need an R8 forum. This is gonna be one hell of a car. :MTM:

Road and Track reports that Audi execs are saying the R8 will be the same pricetag as a Carrera, but with 200 more horsepower!!!!!! They report that Audi execs say the 911 is, in fact, the R8's target!! 911 price, 911 size, 911 (okay, plus a little) weight, 911hp + 200 = bye bye 911, on roads and on markets, according to my math.

Yes, we do need an R8 forum.

:0:

The R8 sure is going to be an amzing bit of metal. We keep hearing how close to the 911 the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage is. It is nowhere near as good.

:bye2:

The R8 is going to raise the game in this category of car. Can't wait to see it.

:hihi:

I agree. R8 forum will be a must as we get closer.

As for the comparison with Porsche and Aston Martin, it will be interesting to see what the new 997 TT and GT3 or likely future enhanced (maybe supercharged) version of the AMV8 will do by the time the R8 finally makes its debut. Those will be harder targets to beat than are the early '06 models of the 911 and AMV8.

Should be fun choosing, no matter what happens.:)

Yes we need a R8 forum just put it on :D or a combined TT/R8 forum.
The rumour will that on the autosalon of Paris 'September 2006" there can be a "Audi R8 Quattro Concept" presented.
Beside the new TT i'm looking forward to the introduction of the R8 Quattro.

SoCal is right, this car's performance competitors are really the 997TT and GT3. It looks like a true bargain, but it's still a year or so away...so I've learned not to get my hopes up. But coming from an Audi exec and not some random magazine, the info seems pretty reliable.

There will be 2 versions of the Audi R8 Quattro to start with.
The R8 4.2 FSI Quattro with ± 350-420 hp and the R8 5.2 FSI Quattro with ± 450-530 hp.
Both V10 FSI will be normal aspirated non turbo engines.
The engine direction of Audi is non turbo for engines with 3.2 liter and more.
Turbo and Twincharger is only planned for 4 cylinder engines at the moment.
All V6 engines will get FSI in the near future, bringing 250-320 hp.

Just car media rumours.
With the introduction of the new RS4 Audi have change from turbo engines to atmo engines and not only for the RS4.
The RS6 will have a high reving 5.2 V10 FSi with ± 520-530 hp.

concedes the following. R8 will be in paris in september. audi is planning a huge debut for it. i don't know if it will include a preview microsite like the one for the Q7. the price is expected to start at about 100K USD. however, one thing is not certain- the engine. some say it will be a V8 and others a V10 or maybe both. and maybe even a V6. for sure i don't think it needs a V10 to do what it is supposed to do. besides, in the spirit of the R8 racer a V8 would be more spiritually consistent. as it stands, an R8 with an RS4 motor will do 0-60 in 4.4. close enough to the gallardo (4.0) with 100 more hp!

An R8 forum (or a TT/R8 forum in a pinch :D) is a must. Afterall, I'll be the first to admit that although I am picking up a Q7 later on, the R8 is a much more important vehicle for Audi (imagewise) and more deserving of its own forum.

Please, please Audi, if a V8 is going to be base model, then please, please let it make at least as much HP as the RS 4! 430hp would not be asking too much! 440 or 450 would be even better (and not entirely impossible since the F430 squezes 490+hp out of their 4.3L).

But the upcoming V10...oooh, that sounds nice.

I agree - dedicated R8 forum is a must, and probably not too soon to start it. I expect that the new R8 will stir even wider interest and at least as empassioned enthusiasm as the RS4 on these pages.:wo:

Rear-biased AWD powered by a 5.2L V10 NA engine w/ FSI with about 500+ bhp in a manual or DSG. Keep the weight down and balanced and that will be one heck of a great ride.:revs:

Can't wait.

Audi is still further developing the 4.2 V8 FSI engines.
The RS4 4.2 V8 FSI engine will have 450-500 hp in the new B8.

Will the RS4 now be an regular version as the M3? I thought when the RS6 come then the RS4 will be discontinued.
That's really interesting what you said here. Thanks for the info.

The RS4 B7 will be discontinued.
But wenn the RS4 B8 arrive it will have a 450-500 hp 4.2 V8 FSI engine.

and iceman i agree with you. the RS4 engine could still be further developed, though, IMO with a slightly higher displacement such as 4.5 liters. nonetheless, my very sincere belief is that the base engine in the R8 will be the RS4 engine as it stands with the difference lying in any different modifications to the exhaust and such. there would be no room or need for a V6 in the R8 because an S version of the new TT can fill that void pricewise. the real question is whether a V10 is needed in the R8. it would only add weight. the only thing it could add would be torque but the R8 will be light.

we'll know soon enough. and an R8 forum can't come sooner since the car seems to be about 6 months away from presentation.

Now see, this would make sense! Have the "base" R8 with 450hp therfor having more hp than the RS 4 and then having the R8 V10 make 550-600hp and keep that above the hp of the RS 6.

To me it doesn't make sense to have the flagship outperformed by the super sedans (hp wise). I know, I know... hp isn't everything, but never, do any car manufactures have their flagship models produce less hp than their "lower" entries.

So:
RS 4: 420hp
R8 (base): 430-450

RS 6: 550+
R8(V10): 575+ ***types hoping***

sorry ben, i don't think it could happen. the murcielago makes less than 600. the gallardo makes 520. the replacements for these two cars are at least 2 years away. i actually think the R8 might get the V8 only, at first, and then get a V10 once the gallardo has been replaced. the gallardo JUST got a 20 hp bump.

the RS6 will have 550 but it needs that power. that engine might go in the R8, but not immediately, IMHO.

RXBG,

Yeah I know it ain't likely, but I still think it must have at least equal (or slightly more) hp than the "lesser" models. It doesn't make sense to give it a 400 hp V8 when the RS 4 makes more. It doesn't make sense to give it a 520hp V10 when the RS 6 (probably) will make more. That's all. To me, a flagship is a flagship for a reason. Figures are a big part of the "Aura".

Navies don't put second rate engines into their flagships, neither do car manufatures. At least not yet...

i don't think the R8 will start with anything less than the exact engine as the RS4 (425 hp). add a few exhaust changes and etc and it could make 450 easy- a SCREAMER for sure. that would power it perfectly below the 520 hp gallardo and give it room for a V10 later. a V10 now would have to make less than 520 and how much less? why put in a a V10 that makes barely 40 hp more than the V8 model?

so-- i think the V10 power will come. just not now. and that is ok with me. i get to keep exclusivity for a little while :hahahehe:

A 450hp RS 4 motor will do the car fine.

But if/when they put in the V10, it "needs" at least what the RS 6 makes.

It is still not on-thinkeble that the R8 will have A 5.2 litre V10 FSI engine with 420 or 450 hp.
The V10 engine weights only 220 Kg and that is almost the same as the 4.2 V8 i think.
From the prestige and sound site of thinks it is better to put in a 420 hp 5.2 V10 FSI than a 420 hp 4.2 V8 FSI engine.

you could go either way. a high strung V8 or a torquey V10. can't go wrong either way. V8 more nimble. V10 a bit too close to gallardo. people might call it a reskined gallardo and i would hate that. doesn't look like it will have four seats, either.....

hey...just a few more months until paris. maybe they'll give some info in geneva :vhmmm:

Now I know the engine thing has been hashed to death, but the more I think about it, the more I think it would be nice if it was a TT V8. After all, if Audi is going to name it the R8, then why not give it the real R8's TT V8 set up?

Be nice to have a TT V8 @500hp in that thing. They're the ones who will be playing up the heritage card (the fact alone that they're naming it after the unbeatable race car is proof enough), so I say, play it up to the full! Make a TT V8 available!
