The test ends with:

"The BMW M5 packs an engine every bit the equal of the Lamborghini's, but even M Power's spectacular fireworks can't disguise the fact that while the Gallardo was born great the M5 has had greatness thrust upon it"

The M5 is based on the 5-series, so of course it wasn't "born great." It was not born an M5, while the Gallardo was born a Gallardo and born great. Duh!!

If "greatness" means performance, they simply stated the obvious. The M5, like the RS6, etc., is 4000lbs. - come on, it's not going to have the same performance has any high-performing 3500lb. car, especially one born to be a pretty pure sports car. M, RS, AMG, and others employ geniuses, but not wizards. In this case, M did the one best thing you could do to up the overall performance of a 4000lb. car, one that will never have truly amazing handling, by putting a monster of an engine in it. Then they worked the suspension as best they could, as do RS, AMG, etc. No miracles (sorry EVO), but in my mind, more than satisfactory for a 4000lb. block of metal, leather and rubber.
