Audi is considering producing its first diesel-engined RS performance model.
Audi's new 4.2-litre V8 diesel engine, developed for the flagship A8 saloon, has been engineered so that it fits smaller Audi's.
The company has confirmed that the 323bhp V8 will fit into the engine bay of the A4.
The petrol-powered RS4, with a 414bhp 4.2-litre V8 engine, is due to arrive towards the end of this year.
It sprints to 62mph from rest in 4.8sec and has a limited top speed of 155mph.
A diesel-engined RS4, although less powerful, ought to come close to matching those figures.
Thanks to its superior pulling strength, it would probably pick up speed quicker than the petrol car on the move, too.
The 4.2-litre diesel engine gives the A8 a claimed 0-62mph time of 5.9sec, so a smaller and lighter RS4 would likely undercut that.
The diesel RS4 has not been confirmed for production, but Audi sources said it would be 'a logical thing to do'.

It would be very very different and interesting but I can't help wondering how it can be "logical" as they so eloquently put it. Surely all of us petrol heads will agree that half the joy of driving a sports car is reving and beating the car as it screams at 7K rpm. And even though it's killa' fast, it would kill some of the fun if it sounded like a tractor on steroids.

I'm not entirly sure that the V8 TDi would work.. yes, as you mention it has massive torque, but it will only still rev to about 4000 rpm.. the petrol V8 revs to wll over 8000rpm.

This will mean more gear changes for the tdi version, and we all know that gear changes means lost time.

The fastest 0-60 cars all have gearing that mean that they only need one or two gear changes to get there.
