Don't even try this in your BMW or MB...

(Before there's any discussion about it, the cable is there for safety.)

:applause: Done in Finland.

But why? There is also a lot of similar ski jump arenas in Germany.

WOW, I don't think I'll be doing that in my RS 6 with street tires!

Ben:addict: ( I think that is the same ski jump as the original quattro ski jump commercial!)

second of all... you have to have BALLLLLLS to do that! man that was crazy!

if that is a show about cars ... like TopGear i'd like to see what else they do... that is one heluva track to put the stig on...hehe

3rd... im happy to hear they played the Prodigy for the mission (yeah besides audi, sorry to say guys, but also love the prodigy)

can anyone confirm the engine they had in there?

I saw this already about a week ago in German television, "Stern TV". They did a whole coverage on how they set it all up etc.

They did this because there were people claiming that no car could ever climb an angle like that it snow, and that Audi faked the quattro TV-ad from about 15 years ago where an Audi 100 quattro climbed the exact same ski-jump.

So they decided to redo the whole thing with a current A6 model, for celebration of the 25 years of quattro technology and document that it can be very well done.

I will not be supprised if they do a new TV-ad with the A6 climbing:thumb:

You have to mention that the final try was made with spike tires!:race:

But anyway, great performance!

Well, that was quick :D Although I think that ad would have made an even bigger impression if they somehow compared it with the same run of the Audi 100 quattro from about 15 years ago :top:

Now I should be starting to take money for my fortune telling ;)

There was this commercial about a Audi 100 Quattro climbing up a ski jump which was discussed a lot. There was also the rumor, that it was a fake, because of the cabel. So Audi wanted to show, that it is really possible in an Audi, and well, they did it :)

“Safety first” was the underlying principle for the entire project. Keeping the car in the steeply angled position at the top of the jump was the biggest challenge. As soon as it stopped there it would immediately slide back again. The A6 therefore had to be “held on to” at the top. To solve this problem, an ingenious system was fixed to the ski jump and to the bottom of the car. The “roll-back safety device” was equipped with three independent systems. It was located on a steel baseplate and weighed around 65 kilograms. This “sled” was installed to the underbody of the 335 bhp Audi A6 (1.9 tonnes) and merely served to prevent the car from sliding back; it was not able to pull it.

They had to try it three times.. the first two times the car went sideways and almost seemed to crash into the side wall. It was a really dangerous project (but Audi even did it into the news on german TV :D quite a good commercial I think)

Yes, the TV magazine in which they showed the report is one of the most-seen in german TV!
I guess it is well recognized now!

@itisme: läuft die werbung denn schon in deutschland??

Now imagine what it must feel like to strap on a pair of skis and START at the top. No cable for them, they are the crazy ones.

The MB would have 4-matic no? just like this A6 has quattro...
I'd like to see an E430 4-matic give it a try with those tires...

4 Matic uses a Haldex diff. So its mostly RWD 80% of the time. Its not a pure AWD system, like Quattro or Subaru.

Aronis
March 8th, 2005, 15:44
with those spiked tires and enough power any of the awd cars could do that. The fact that the MB is 80% RWD 'most of the time' is meaning less since the system will transfer power to the non-slipping wheels.

Would a A6 2.5TDI Quattro 180hp make it to the top ?

Sure hope so :)

I'm not so sure. Why would they (other manufactures) think the commercial was a fake and why would Audi feel it had to "prove" it could really do that if "any" AWD vehicle could climb that ski jump?:vhmmm:

Ben:addict: (quattro!!!)

I doubt it very much. See link in my first post in this thread.

This is not a sophisticated drive train issue, its all TRACTION.....Spiked Tires being driven by enough power.

The sophisticated all wheel drive can quickly shift power to the wheels with grip and change it side to side front to back quickly in turns and in varying road conditions.

In this situation, the road conditions are uniform, it's a straight run, and as long as the car has enough power vs weight and all four wheels are being turned any car could make that climb.

Simply because the other guys' all wheel drives have more of a rear wheel (MB) or front wheel (Subaru) bias does not mean that they could not do this trick.

With the studded tires shown, I doubt there is very much slipage to require a sophisticated drive train to millisecond by millisecond vary power to each wheel.

Just my 2 cents

Mike

I'd like to see an STi or EVO with those tires try it, I'd bet they too could do it.

More than a good AWD you'd need a good driver..Who would be as well enough insane to do it:D
