This is a follow up to a May 2003 thread concerning towbars.
I currently have an S6 avant and wish to buy an RS6 avant. But I need to have a tow bar for towing my Lotus-Sunbeam. My dealer (I live in the UK) tells me that the RS6 avant cannot be fitted with a towbar. Having looked underneath I suspect the rear chassis structure is the same on the RS6 as the S6. This thought is supported from the May thread - that it is possible to transfer my present hitch - has anyone actually done this?
Another complication will be that after removing the hitch from my S6 it will need a replacement cross member (other wise the handling may be a bit soggy). The obvious thing is to use the removed cross member of the RS6 but as the dealer is anti me having a tow bar I may not get any help from them. So the same question as in the above paragraph - has anyone done this?
I can see the point concerning shunt reversal loads through the chassis but consider that I will not be subjecting the car/trailer combination to such extreme conditions.
