my close friend (in US) is looking for a Porsche as a weekend car - perhaps used one.
Any advise as what to and not what to get?

It all depends on how much money he is willing to spend.
Me myself I am thinking about either a used 996 Turbo or a new 997 Carrera S..

I'd say somewhere between 50-90k. He likes the 911 for some reason.
how high are the maintenance cost comparing with rs6 ?

George,
Servicing costs should be on par with the RS6, if not abit more, but the service intervals on the water cooled Porsches are far between. (10-12,000miles)
Black 993 Turbo gets my vote. :incar:

ok, thanks - we will visit Porsche in Charlotte this weekend so we shall see ..... he liked 911 cabrio they have there ....

Unless you friend is looking for the automotive equivalent of a Surrey (with removable fringe, but genuine leather seats), avoid the convertibles and Targas.
The most inspiring drive is the GT3. More so than the GT2 or Turbo. A definate if its likely to see the track.
If there are track days in prospect then perhaps a lightweight 964 would be a compromise. There is a 1999 GT3 Cup availailable in Florida, within budget, but that is 'track only'., but I'm sure there are ways and means in NC.
