"Just under one month before the public unveiling at the Paris Mondial de l'Automobile on September 21, Ferrari have launched official studio photography of their F430 'Modena Evoluzione'.

Based on the 360 Modena, the F430 has 70% new components and a 4.3-litre engine. This, together with brutal styling adopted from the Enzo supercar, is set to win back lost ground from the Lamborghini Gallardo.

The F430 is a technical masterpiece, with a new six-speed F1 gearbox called "Impulse". It also comes with a electronic differential, which can be controlled internally by the driver through a knob on the steering wheel.

In accordance with the exterior, the interior has also undergone changes with a new steering wheel and centre consol being the most obvious. Compared to the 360 Modena, the F430's interior has sportier overtones. The steering wheel is more adjustable, whilst the speedometer background is available in yellow or red. The centre console is also available in either aluminium or carbon finish.

With the European version of the car developing 490 bhp, the 1,350 kg (dry weight) F430 has a power-to-weight ratio equal to that of the 360 Challenge Stradale.

Performance is stunning, with the sprint from 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) taking only 3.95 seconds. 0-160 km/h (0-100 mph) takes 9.20 seconds, whilst 0-242 km/h (0-150 mph) takes 21.4 seconds. The car does the standing quarter mile in 12.8 seconds at 190 km/h (118 mph), whilst the top speed lies at 315 km/h (197 mph). Optional CCM Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes help ensure that this power remains under control.

The new F430 will be priced 4% higher than the outgoing 360 Modena, and first deliveries in Europe are scheduled in late October and the beginning of November 2004. Ferrari plans that the Spider and Challenge versions will debut roughly one year after the launch of the coupe. A Challenge Stradale version remains as yet undecided.

Can only be good for Gallardo, next model is 'around the corner'.

:D Yes it is a tad flashy but I quite like it. It's bold and a little risky but I think less risky than when the Enzo first came out. The Gallardo does look a little more consistent as an overall design (after all it was designed that way, not a revamp) but for a redesign I think Ferrari should get credit for not totally botching it.

All the more reason I'm so impressed with the C6 Vette. Close with performance and style but nowhere near the price. Bring on the Z06!:incar:

I really wonder how modern sports cars are actually designed. Take the rear view mirrors, for example. Look at the F430 ones, and look at some others including the 997 Porsche. The design of the latter's wing mirrors is supposed to improve the airflow over the rear spoiler. I must remember to try that out sometime!
To be honest this style of rear view mirror mount looks to be fussy and not a prime candidate for good aerodynamic characteristics. Is it possible that in certain respects the design of cars is being dictated by the CFD software used in their design? Can one get a correlation between new releases of software and automobile design features?
It is good to see that a serious approach to radiator airflows has been taken, out the side not under!
Sticking chicken wire into grills and openings works in some cases but not all, I think Jaguar have done it quite well, I'm not sure in Ferrari's case, it looks a bit agricultural.
My biggest question is how good does the catcher have to be if the pitcher has put up a knuckle ball?

I think you are correct.

But the rear view mirrors on the 997 is said to provide downforce at a certain speed.
