Hi,

The Passat 2.0 was involved in a minor shunt some weeks back and we've had a MK3 Golf as a courtecy car for the meantime, not that we needed it, but I convinced the folk to take up the offer due to curiosity, of how good or bad the MK3 Golf is. Tommorow we return the MK3 to the repair shop so I thought I'd take the opportunity to grab some shots, after a quick wash.

First impressions are of the obvious traits, giving away the "old age" of the car, I don't know which year it is, but the interior design gives away the age too well, the plastics used are just that, plastic, crap plastic has been used on the interior, but it's durable, which is a plus. Where as the R32 (Yes it's an un-fair comparison!) has both the ergonomics, build and quality just right on the interior, very Audi-esque. Interior points goes to the MK4 R32.

The radio of the MK3 is terrible, the buttons are small, and are a pain to use, sound quality? HA, no-way-ho-say! 1/10 rating. R32 wins hand down here aswell. But SatNav+DSP helps the R32.

Performance, you got to be joking, I jumped into the MK3 and started it up first time, I swear it sounded like a diesel, but it wasn't! The engine pulls really well, I took it for a blast over the de-restricted mountain roads and the MK3 got to 100mph with relative ease. The MK3's performance was rather impressive, but not R32 impressive and the numbers can vouch for me.

Handling, this is a tough one - The steering feel on both cars are rather similar, none weigh up into corners, but keep the positive feel they posess. 4WD helps the R32 in the twistier situations. Again the R32 gets the vote here.

Overall impressions of the MK3? Well, the car is a blast to drive, spectacular fun!! I was soo impressed with it, I let a friend who was planning on getting one, have ago, he decided to go for another Citroen hot hatch after he wrote of the other one, but the MK3 was in his list of cars, he never got round to trying it and now he has, he's extremely dissapointed with the Saxo. :D

I wouldn't mind trying the VR6 version...should be a much fairer comparison between the R32 and the VR6.

Here are some pictures of the MK3. Just wondering if anyone knows how big this engine is? The car looks to me like a Golf GTI, but did they come equipped with such small engines?

The engine size was my biggest shock, I was expecting a 1.8/2.0litre under there, so I needed to have a look under the bonnet to see what it had, I guess it isn't a 1.8, let along a 2litre!

Oh yeah, I thought I'd try out the VAG (Audi) product line of car care products which we've had lying round for years....:)
