I got a ticket last Friday coming home from out of town. I was following a state trooper who was doing 80 and he decided to slow down and so did I but I kept going once I got to the speed limit and he pulled behind me and stopped me for doing 78 in a 65. :D I almost said hey buddy I was just following you since you did not have your lights on I thought it was ok but I kept myself from saying such. Now I have to try to get myself out of it. Damn I should have bought the Valentine I kept looking at it but never bought it. Oh well...:nono:

It is total BS that cops are above the law in these matters. What I do is when a cop slows down I slow down, even if the retard slows to 50! That way he can never get behind me to give me a ticket. I share your frustration as I see this happen alot.:nono:

the same thing happened to me. i was going along with a cop about 50 in a 40. i didn't even notice him. then hes behind me with lights on. he comes up to the window and says "we looked pretty good going down that road together. lets slow it down a little."

If you witness a police officer speeding, you should be able to press charges. We all have video cameras and THEY use video and pics to pin us down.

Thus we should be able to bring charges against an abusive policeman who is speeding for no legal reason.

That day will come. And such bullshit stories will become a thing of the past.

If a cop is going 80 down the highway, not persuing someone or going somewhere for a police matter, he or she is SPEEDING. Period. He or she IS NOT a better driver than the rest of us. They may have taken advanced driving courses, but so have many non-police.

I would like to tape the road side conversation if that cop had done the same thing to an Attorney or better, a Judge. That cop would be in deep doo doo.

Abuse is Abuse, and we should not have to stand for it, this ain't Iraq or Iran....

Klint I have been waiting for your reply. I thought you would have some nice words to say about the Police. :D My wife said something after I was stopped, she said, " you are lucky it was just for 78 in a 65 and not the time you were going 160 in a 65 or even all of the other times you were speeding". Thats why I married her for her wisdom.. :hihi: I guess there was some good in it. Funny how our loved ones have different point of view of driving.

My sister keeps telling me that I drive too fast. Personally, I don't believe so. She complains mostly as I go around corners or highway ramps, but our cars can deal with such conditions easily. Nothing out of ordinary I assure you, but for her is toooooo fasssssst!

Well, once on our way up from MD, I sort of took a nap on the rear seat. I was still driving my S4 then. Once I woke up, I look to my right, and she is semi-racing an E36 M3, going about 95MPH.
This happened on a scarce traffic part of CT (route 84).

I could not believe it!!! I just let it go, and did not say anything.

I find speed limits to be a strange bird.

In the 70's the limit was 75 on the highways in Massachusetts when Tire technology was weak, suspensions did not handle curves and sudden lane changes well, brakes were poor, etc.....yet it was ok...

Today even the cheapest car comes with decent tires, brakes, suspension and ABS.

Now of course most cars in the 70's included much STEEL to protect you, but todays cars are clearly safer. So what is the speed limit now? 55, ok it's up to 65 in many places.

What is the basis for 55 mph limit? They say better gas milage. This is simply a myth. The fact is that cars are GEARED to get better gas milage at 55, but from an aerdynamic point of view, ask an aerospace engineer, the more efficient speed is about 78 to 80 for most cars, now just gear the tranny to match that an gas milage will be ok.

Most drivers drive at 65 yto 75 mph, its a comfortable highway speed. What makes long trips a pain is the 'fear' of getting pulled over for being 10 or 15 over. This makes long trips a pain....but driving 6 hours at 55 can KILL YOU....dull...

Also, 10 over in a 30 zone is considered just as bad as 10 over in a 55 zone. This makes NO SENSE. 10 over in a 30 should be a bigger fine, more risk to children in streets, etc, If a kid is out on the highway playing, boy he or she has got bigger problems than getting hit...

I totally agree the speed laws in general are screwed up. I think the US needs to spend more time and effort educating drivers on HOW TO DRIVE. I can't tell you how insane it makes me watching a mini van full of kids swerving all over the road not paying attention AT THE SPEED LIMIT. WTF you have got to be kidding me what is more dangerous a educated, trained driver doing 80mph or some clueless mini van driver causing a serious road hazzard.

The Autobahn has totaly spoiled me.....I have seen the promise land and it is full of cars and drivers that know how to drive and follow rules to the road. In fact the accident and death rate is LOWER on the autobahn the on US hwy's. HELLO WAKE UP USA....I will stop ranting know:w:

Oh, on a side note....to all RS6 owners in California....if you speed in Nevada and get a ticket.....don't worry. Just pay the fine and move on your way....they don't report to California DMV:applause: .....as my wife found out two weeks ago. She got taged by an airplane...man was she pissed. My friends were pitching her crap because she couldn't talk her way out of it. See it was a male cop and my wife is on the attractive side and they feel a pretty girl should be able to get out of a ticket if there is a male cop. She did however get it reduced to 78 in a 65 instead of the 85 they clocked her at.:D

I would fight it....totally bogus. See what happens when you take out the Merc:nono: :D :D

I agree that the speeding laws are screwed up, but what is more important is the lack of uniform enforcement.

For example, if you are driving a pickup truck pulling a boat trailer at 65 you are far more dangerous that a driver in a car like an RS6 at 95....when was the last time the bearings on the boat trailor were greased???? And those little tires are going more like 110 since they are so small. And those tires 'ain't' speed rated anyway.

Problem with speeding fines in US is, IMHO, relatively simple - cash revenue and not only for the state, but even more for the insurance companies....

As long as insurance co. will provide police force with free radar guns in exchange for information about speeding citations .... and as long as you get a spedding fine where you have listed charges like:

1. $35 - local 911 fund
2. $35 - new judicial computer system in county xxx
3. $40 - road improvement program
4. $56 - court fee
5. $3 - fime for exceeding speed limit by 3 miles

total $168 for doing 68 in 65 mph limit, on I-79 somewhere in s...place

This has nothing to do with any speed enforcement or even remotely with any road safety - simple theft.

Not to mention your policy going up every time you get one if you live in such area ....

Its funny that everybody is talking about the speed limit of 55. Here in NY they just released permission , to up the speed limit to 65 in places in NY like 17.

And about germany having less accidents beacuase of no speed limit. Yup they should do that here. But then it cost money. To make the roads the same.

German Roads....

I may be wrong but I don't think that the roads in Germany, where there are no speed limits (some roads, not all), are no better than our highways. We have excellent interstate highways on which I feel very comfortable moving along at high speeds.

But in Germany, I am told, and Europe in general, if you come up on someone who is in the high speed lane, they GET OUT OF YOUR WAY before you can even try to flash them. Those DRIVERS ARE AWAKE and ALERT.

Here, most drivers are ASLEEP behind the wheel.

Yes, reaction time becomes more critical at higher speeds, thus going slower is logically safer, but the question is the statistical difference. Is there one between 55 and 85? Perhaps yes, but plenty of drivers routinely drive at 85 and have never been in an accident.

In NY the "STATE SPEED LIMIT" is now 65, so, if you are on one of those highways still marked "STATE SPEED LIMIT, 55 mph" can you go 65? The sign says TWO things. State Speed Limit which is now 65 and also it says 55 mph. Strange, but would be interesting to see that argued in court!

You're all SO on the money with this thread! Coming from the UK I couldn't (and still don't!) belive how easy it is to get a license here in the states, it's nuts. We may as well hand people guns, oh, wait a minute, we do.

We definitely need to get a new drivers' test implemented, there are so many deaths unrelated to speeding alone, usually drinking is involved too.

I think the 55 mph speed limit came into play due to the 70's oil shortage, it was to conserve fuel and they've just left it there. Anyway, that's what I heard was the reason.

Aronis
April 28th, 2004, 16:59
The gas shortage speed limit was bull...

Just ask an Aerospace engineer about the aerodynamics of most cars and which speed is more efficient. Most I have talked to point to 78 mph or so.

The fuel ecconomy is based on
1. Gearing - US cars are geared for better fuel efficency at 55
2. Frontal Surface Area (not shape) - which effects wind resistance, ie drag
3. Drag co-efficient - related to shape, but not as import as frontal surface area - ie two dimentional picure of car from dead on in front - ie smaller car, less wind resistance.
4. of course the weight of your right foot is very important, hard starts, burn more gas.

German Roads....

I may be wrong but I don't think that the roads in Germany, where there are no speed limits (some roads, not all), are no better than our highways.

The Autobahn is far superior in terms of surface quality, construction and design. I recently saw a special on the history chanel about it. It is nearly twice as thick as our hwy's and much smoother with no big bumps or depressions. They maintaine the hell out of it as well...you will never seen a pot hole on the Autobahn. I can tell you from first hand experince (have driven on it) that it is FAR superior. IMO our hyw's are falling apart pieces of crap. In NorCal the maintence is very poor and in some cases down right dangerous.

Aronis
April 28th, 2004, 17:39
I have spoken to people who have driven there as well. I agree our roads have pot hole problems, but for the most part in NE and Up State NY the roads are pretty good.

ALso in Europe Trucks are not allowed to go arround UNCOVERED so less debree ends up on the road!

Our roads are littered with debree, rocks, cans, bottles, full bags of trash, bed parts, mattrices, dressors, or what ever else falls off the back of an open truck, including nails, screws, etc.

Our road should be better, but first we need people to stop droping their trash there!

As far as California roads are concerned, I think bad road surfaces are planned to keep the tree hugger, minivan driving, liberals happy, since you can't speed on such roads. I think the same is true in southern NY and all of Massachusetts. You can't speed through a mine field. LOL

not always - you need to leave enough margins for the idiots, I had case recently going about 260 (lights on, left lane) when some idiot went from on-ramp straight to the left lane to pass a truck in right lane ...... doing about 100 .....

Humans are naturally not the greatest at everything, one maybe able to cook, but can they please their lady in bed? Maybe. We're as a race are prone to f()ck ups. :D
