View Full Version : Spring NE Meet!!!

The nice weather is fast approaching and it's time to start planning a Spring meet in the Northeast!!! I'm thinking of meeting somewhere around New Paltz or Kingston, NY just off the Thruway, I-87 a little over an hour North of NYC. Speedracer is familar with and had some ideas on great rides in that area.

We had a great time at the first meet last fall. Do a search on NE Meet or go to articles to see pictures read about our first NE meet. We had a small but very enthusiatic turnout. Since many more people now have their Beasts and everyone's really sick of winter by now, I'm hoping for a really strong turnout.

I'm thinking of meeting mid to late April or early May, probably on a Sunday. Let's choose a date.

Everyone is welcome! Whether you're an RS6, VAG or any performance car owner or simply an enthusiast. I'd love to have a Gallardo, Murcielago (I know of one owner I can invite), Enzo, M3s & M5s, perhaps M-B McLaren, S55 and E55 AMGs, Porsches, Viper, Corvette or any perofrmance car show up. I also think it would be great to have some S4s and the DSG TT!

Could someone volunteer to take responsibility for posting this thread and any subsequent follow-up on the Audiworld, M5, RS246 and any other board they know of?

Karman, could you post one of the group shots on this thread of the Fall meet?

Post dates that work best for you. We'll pick a date and a rain date based on feedback. The weekends of April 3 & 24 are not he best for me ...

I think it sounds like it would be a blast depending upon turnout. I'm an RS6 owner in Manhattan who'd be interested in showing up. When you narrow down some potential dates in April, let me know.

I would love to join the great bunch of NE RS6 owners on a run once again but I am now back home in Hong Kong for good. If you guys ever visit this beautiful city, I would love to be your tour guide. :asian:

I have two local BMW friends (one with an M Roadster, one with an M3) that have been itching for a drive. Depending on the date, it could be a nice trip from Doylestown PA.

SUNDAY APRIL 18th (rain date 4-25)

I've just been informed that April 11th is Easter Sunday, obviously not a good choice. So to avoid low turnout or really pissing off spouses, significant others and families, lets plan on April 18th with (4-25 rain date) as the rain date.

Preliminary plan is to meet in Kingston, NY (Exit 19) on NYS Thruway. From there we have access to Woodstock NY, the Catskill Mountains, the Ashokan Reservoir area, Mohonk Mountain, etc. Ah! It's beginning to come together in my head.
Will bring the 911 out of the mothballs, and for those of you who met Cooper (LUV2XLR) on the first Northeast Run, he'll now be driving his own car, an immaculate 2002 WRX with coilover suspension and Wilwood brakes that I bought yesterday.

I'll need some sort of directions, or close to it from Eastern MA...
I'll be there.

Nelson,

I can give you directions - it's easy.

Speed,

There's a really interesting drive up to Hunter Mountain. It winds up (or down) through this incredible ravine. I'll have to check the map.

April 18th is the second Sunday of School vacation week.

Many of those who have RS6's also have rug rats and will be coming back from vacation on that day!

I am going to Atlantis for the week LOL....

I would have loved to come, but sorry..

Have a great time.

I also cannot make it. The Boston chapter of the BMWCCA has their first autocross event on the 18th, and I plan on participating. Hopefully our MINI Cooper will be delivered and broken in by then. Otherwise, I'll be piloting the Beast!

Have fun at the Meet-up!

If we meet around 10 AM, hang out for a while & take pics, then drive somewhere we can have lunch. I think keeping the drive to 50 miles would feel about right. What do others think? I'll try to sdcope out some areas in the next couple of weeks.

Finnus-

Put yourself in my place. Would you really want your 17 yr old son who's been driving for less than a year to be driving a WRX? I'd have preferred a Mazda Protege... OK a Mazdaspeed Protege. He wants to rice it all up with an STI wing, Borla, etc. I guess subtlety is lost on teenagers.

Speed,

Cooper seemed pretty responsible and he could be doing a lot worse things. I have to admit, I like these "rice" cars. It's not for me, but they are fun to see. Its people taking pride in their cars and improving their performance and look.

I took a test drive Sunday, starting in New Paltz (Exit 18 of NYS Thruway, I-87), driving over Mohonk Mt. then up Route 209 to Kingston. The ride over Mohonk is excellent, good roads, although if you get stuck behind a poke, you're pretty much stuck. When you get over the mountain, the scenery is spectacular. Rt. 209 to Kingston is a bit uneventful. We could just drive over Mohonk, then back to New Paltz for lunch.

As an alternative, we could meet at the Kingston exit (19). We could drive a) up to Woodstock as Speed suggested or b) West on Rt. 28 to Phoencia, Rt. 214 to Hunter for lunch, then Rt. 23A to Catskill and back to I-87. Rt. 23A to Catskill winds down through a beautiful ravine along a rushing stream.

Between them, Mohonk Mtn. and Hunter have some of the most beautiful scenery in the Catskills I'm aware of.

We could meet about 10 AM, hang out for a while, then decide where and how far we're going to drive. Perhaps we could just drive somewhere for brunch/lunch.

The last meet, we pretty much decided when we met and let things unfold. That worked well, but we had a small group. If all we did was meet for lunch, it would be a great day.

I'm looking for feedback as to

1) where to meet,
2) what time to meet, and
3) whether and how far to drive.

Again, I think its best to decide if and where we drive when we meet. Please don't wait until the last minute to post your preferences.

Aronis, you're from the area, do you have any suggestions as to drives, restaurants, etc.? Erik, I'd also be interested in what you have found works best when you meet.

We don't have to take 209 directly to Kingston. There are lots of back roads that would be great. I've been delinquent in not sitting down with a map, but will try to do so tonight. The Little Bear Cafe in Woodstock is a great Chinese place with a hippie slant, if it's still there.

Mohonk is the closest one can get to being in Switzerland in the US. The drive to the lower gatehouse is fantastic, the drive on to the property is amazing (BUT WE WOULD HAVE TO BE CALM ON THE PROPERTY:) That drive is shared with hikers and it would be a shame to piss the owners off. If we wanted to drive up to the mountain house, we will need to make reservations for lunch there. The food is fantastic, but expensive. I had a wedding there one Sunday morning and an engagement party at the Culinary that night, the food was better at Mohonk. Since we all know that the weather will be fantastic, we could even hike up the trails there before lunch? There are two paths 1) one a gravel path that you can handle even if you are not in great shape, 2) the lemon squeeze, that is more like rock hoping with a final vertical climb on a wooden vertical ladder (not for the faint at heart, but what a blast.) OR you can rent a boat and enjoy the water.
My vote is for Mohonk for lunch at least, with a spirited drive and/or hike before with a drive after too.

I am open to anything that Speed suggests, we have the same ideas when it comes to drving :thumb:

I agree with Robert that Mohonk is great. Having said that, I'm not sure we want to spend so much time there, and as you say it is expensive. My thoughts were more like: Driving almost completely on back roads (read no cops) starting in Kingston, driving over Mohonk Mt, going up past Lake Minnewaska, around the Ashokan Reservoir, through Mount Tremper, to Woodstock, and then back to the Thruway in Kingston. We could eat in Woodstock or New Paltz. We could also do this in the opposite direction. No offense, but I'm more into driving than eating. I love hiking, but that would make a pretty long day.

Great route, that would be wonderful. I like the plan, lets eat in Woodstock. I vote for a 10am start in Kingston. That way we could have a good two hour drive before eating AND maybe some of us could drive after lunch too.

I really don't know the area...yet!!!, but what SpeedRacer mentioned sounds pretty cool. I vote SpeedRacer for Prez...err...route to take.

I go down to NYC and NJ a lot. When going to NJ, I take route 87, so I'm hoping that I won't be too far.
I'll have to get a map to get some idea. After all, for a 10am start, which I totally agree with, I have to leave home very early from Boston... can't wait!

As you approach Albany on I-90 West from Mass, you'll see exit B1. DON'T take this exit even though its a continuance of I-90 (and would eventually connect with I-87).

Stay straight (this is called the "Berkshire Spur"). There are probably signs to NYC. You'll cross the Hudson and connect with I-87 (you'll be getting on at exit 21A) in about 6-7 miles. Head South to exit 19 for Kingston (about 50 miles).

More details to follow.

Mohonk, etc, sounds great. I agree that a hike, lunch and drives would be too much. So lets plan for lunch and the drives. Drive before lunch can be planned ("required" LOL), with drive after optional. :MTM:

I was talking about Route 299 over the mountain ... I'm open to whatever and defer to those who know the area well. If we determine a planned route and lunch destination prior to the meet, then I would suggest some kind of route map and a rough timetable, just in case people get separated or get a late start and want to meet us for lunch.

After lunch, those heading South could take one route, those heading North another (Hunter?).

My sentiments exactly. I used to have a weekend house in Kripplebush- 6 miles from the mountain. 299 is the road. Then we can go up the other way past all the rock climbers towards Lake Minnewaska.

As an aside, I once was driving this road in my Porsche and a stationary policement stopped me during hunting season to see if I had a DEER IN MY TRUNK! LOL

We (I) will definitely work on detailed route plans and stops so that no one gets lost. Also, if anyone only wants to do half the drive, they could get back on the Thruway at New Paltz. Basically, I am planning a large figure-8.

I was thinking we would meet around 10AM and head off about 11. That will give everyone some extra time to get there as well as some time to socialize and photo opps. I'm open to suggestions if anyone thinks an earlier start is better.

Regarding the meeting spot, the commuter lot right off of the New Paltz exit (19?) is as easy as it gets ... I'll leave it to Robert & Speed to choose the meeting spot.

Robert and I ran the roads today and although we don't have the final route locked in stone, (we want to upgrade some of the roads) we can tell you where we will meet: Just after you pay the toll from the NYS Thruway at Kingston-Exit 19 (it doesn't matter whether you are coming from the north or the south) you will turn right into a parking lot right after the traffic circle SIGN and before you get onto Route 28. There are 2 lots. The first one is only for state personnel. We will be in the 2nd one and will park a car near the entrance so you can't miss it.

We will have maps and directions for all who arrive for the meet. You will have the option of doing half the ride and rejoining the Thruway at New Paltz-Exit 18. We will finish up in Woodstock, where we have the option of spending some time. Then we will rejoin and return on some nice roads to Exit 19. If you are coming from the north, you will be able to get back on the Thruway at Exit 20 if you prefer.

Most of the roads will be twisty and scenic. Stay tuned for further info and comments from Robert.

One other thing. Both Robert and I have been on Audiworld drives which are mostly composed of kids driving S4s. Neither of us feels that a posting of this ride on Audiworld would be desireable or beneficial to our meet. That is not to say that we don't welcome other cars and drivers (I personally won't be driving an RS6). It would just be better if they were friends and acquaintances of yours/ours. For those of you who were on the first ride, I think you'd agree that about 10 more cars would have been great— not 20 more. The last Audiworld drive I did had more than 30 cars and everybody got immediately split up. There will not be a lot of passing opportunities on the roads we will be traveling. Too many cars will make the ride less enjoyable. Trust me on this.

Having said that, everyone is welcome, including passengers.

More to come.

Really sounds awesome.

I guess to keep the show to a small number I won't post it anywhere. We'll have to get a few more folks in word-of-mouth.

Some of those nice locations you guys mentioned, I think it would be nice to setup the cameras, and do a second pass.
I guess what I mean, is once we find a couple of spots, not many of course, stop the cars, setup a couple of cameras with video capabilities. Turn the beasts around, and let the do a pass by the cameras. Then pick up the video-graphers.
I have a tripod this time, for a more still movie experience.
We must all bring at least one passenger, as it might come in handy.

I brought my radio last time, and it would be great if others would as well. It helps during the riding. It's quite a small investment, and makes the trip a whole lot of fun.

once we find a couple of spots, stop the cars, setup a couple of cameras with video capabilities, and video a drive-by.

Nelson - Good idea. Does anyone have a video camera they can bring - an official video-grapher for the event?

Today I fine tuned the ride by traveling back up to the drop zone. In Stone Ridge I met Sloan who has an Audi repair shop. He said he and some friends will join us with probably an S8 and some S6's. Wouln't mind an Ur Quattro or 2 either. Welcome!

The official ride will be about 70-75 miles of entertaining and picturesque back roads. I have the official route instructions in a MS Word document format. PM me with your email address, and I will send you a copy.

Great Recon Work guys!!!
I have not meant a more dedicated bunch to get a GTG formalized and have lots of fun. Usually it's just off the cuff, and off we go.

Even last time, Fall Foliage Drive, we had it somewhat planned, and did it off the cuff with extreme success.

Way to go! Can't wait!

Hey Speed --

Not I. That's pretty much my local turf, though I hardly ever use the beast during the week. Had it been a weekend, high probability it would have been me.

Have a great weekend. I am going to take a bit of a drive later in the day. I need my fix!!!

We should be in Woodstock or you could cut out to Kingston instead of going to Woodstock by taking Rte 28 East instead of getting off at Old Rte 28. In any cas, I could get you back to the Thruway without much trouble.

We're on for Sunday!!!

*** OFFICIAL TIME & PLACE ***

Date: Sunday April 18th (rain date 4-25)
Time: Meet Up @ 10 AM (leave at 11 AM)
Place: Exit 19 * Kingston * New York State Thruway

Just after you pay the toll turn right into a parking lot immediately after the traffic circle SIGN and before you get onto Route 28. There are 2 lots. The first one is only for state personnel. We will be in the 2nd one and will park a car near the entrance so you can't miss it.

We should be in New Paltz about Noon, so those who have limited time can get back on the Thruway there. For those in for the full ride, we'll head up to Woodstock and should arrive there by about 2 PM.

Send Speedracer or me a PM for our cell phone numbers.

Looks like we're going to have an excellent turnout! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Thanks John and Robert for setting up the meet, and thanks to everyone who was there for making it happen.I have to admit i didnt know the beast could be pushed that hard.I was also impressed with everyones driving skills, although me being a passenger in my dads beast,i did hold my breath more than once. The scenery was beautiful, although it passed by in a blur;) .I never thought i would say this, it was more thrilling than racing at the dragstrip.I hope we do this again sometime in the near future, like Jeff said you cant really drive the beast the way it was meant to be on the fdr...............................P.S the sound of five RS'6 at full throttle in unison is nothing short of motoring bliss.

RobertV
April 20th, 2004, 13:17
I have never been drag racing, but I prefer road racing events (any track event that requires left turns, right turns and some elevation change.)
I have always said going fast in a straight line on the road does not require much skill (well drag racing does), BUT going fast in the turns is where the true skill comes in.
I have never driven a race car on a track, but I have been a passenger in one at Lime Rock. You think you are fast on the street, just wait until you are on a track. The driver and car do things that you never thought were possible. It seems that you are at the full limit all the time and it is wonderful.
I was lucky enough to drive Speedracer's 81 911 on our way home. You want to see a good driver, just look a Speed. He takes his 24 yr old Pcar and keeps up with most if not all current production cars.
