...as there is plenty of consistent data online to support my opinion. After 9 months of ownership, I LOVE THIS CAR. I wanted one when they first came out, which I think is about the time I bailed on my RS6, but $120k is stupid for a car, so I found a few substitutes until the prices were here on this planet. At the risk of a long boring read, I paid $42k with about 70k on it, I bought DP's on Ebay from the Russians, got a custom tune from a local guy and on pump it made 595/695 at the wheels. It runs awesome...and before everyone starts ragging on me about pics, it's an Audi, they all look the same...just google 2013 Audi S8...mine is phantom black with a black gut, carbon and the B&O.

Relatively the same exclusivity as the RS6 (obviously they made more of these), but expensive to maintain unless you are handy, and parts CAN be expensive, but we all know where to buy parts now. After a month of ownership, I had a lean code, that turned out to be the PCV box, Very common, but also very easy to fix. Spent about $500 on parts and took me about 3-4 hours to fix it (Audi calls for 10hrs).
The point of this, as I've seen some comments from time to time, if you are interested in one, just go buy one, you won't regret it. :S8:

Again, I second this. $45k with 39000 miles. Got a 4 year extended warranty and a Stage 1 tune. I’m not doing DPs because Massachusetts. APR claims 667 at the crank with stage one. This thing is like an aircraft carrier catapult. Smooth, fast, incredible interior.

It's on my short list as well. When I worked for Audi, these were my favorite cars to work on. S6s aren't bad either, but the S8s have the far better interior.

I considered the S6, RS7 and the S8. The interior was a lot of the deciding factor for me. I’m more interested in the part that I have to see all the time rather than the outside that others see. I thought it was interesting too that stock dyno results for the S8 are way higher than the factory claim of 520hp. If you are considering one go watch YouTube videos and you will be convinced.

ttboost

^^^Agreed. Most D4 S8 dynos I've seen are around 450-475awhp, which mine was as well, which if you account for 18-20%DL loss, that's around 560-580crank or so...not 520 they claim. And I don't mind a bigger car, even thought he S8 drives like a smaller car to me...but it's all about the interior and creature comforts...

When I bought it, I drove to Atco with the heated massaging seas on, and ran 11.8 at 117 twice, and drove home with the cooled massaging seats on...and plan to do it again soon, now that I am Stage 2.

The D4 S8 is a sweet ride, for sure.

There's one thing that has prevented me from considering it as my next ride - the lack of a folding rear seatback. May not seem important to some, but I use this feature and the extra cargo capacity it provides regularly, and it would be a bummer not having it.

There's no question that the 4.0TT is underrated in ALL of its applications - any number of dyno tests plus all of the performance figures back this up.

I couldn’t agree more. I ski solo quite often so I was disappointed when I realized the seat didn’t fold and my car doesn’t have a ski pass through. It wouldn’t have stopped me from getting it but now I need to buy a ski rack because I don’t honk my skis will fit in the trunk and I don’t like laying them on a seat.

I was told by an Audi rep that there are electronics mounted on the bulkhead between the back seat and the trunk, so a fold-down seat isn't possible. Not sure about whether a ski pass-through is/was available, though that's also something that I've used frequently on all of my Audis...

The S8 now has full APR suite with switching maps.

Oh my Nellie! Hold on to your shorts....you almost can't drive this car in sport mode around town. I also disabled cylinder deactivation. Keep the globe green....drive your 700hp twin turbo V-8 with its nuts where they need to be. Doh

4.0tt is notorious for misfire issues & a bunch of other troubles.
I'm yet to see one, that actually makes 700hp on dyno. I've seen a few, all of them struggled to get above 650-660. Even though they should be well capable of more.

EDIT: even though they're crazy fast even at 650. :)

General question on the D4 S8, love the car and was curious about maintenance and weakest links on the platform....does this 4.0 TT eventually have the same carbon build up issue the RS4 and other new S models are experiencing. Not a deal breaker at all but good to know ahead of time, these look really attractive in the market right now!

April 24th, 2019, 19:07
I've had mine for a year and a half and I've spent about $600 on maintenance and more on mods, which is just a tune and DP's. They say the turbos go bad, but mine have 80k on them and still make 21-22psi with no issues...

Yeah, I guess I knew all of that. I thought maybe there was another secret I wasn't aware of...unless "mashing" the brake is critical? Do you have to "mash" the brake,. or just hold enough so it doesn't pull you through the lights? Do you mash the throttle while you are mashing the brake, or just modulate it slightly, and then floor it when you let off the brake?

Yeah, so in doing some googling, it seems the procedure is this:

1. ESC off (not sure if you hold until brake guard is off too?, I usually do.)
2. Pull it back into Sport.
3. Push brake firmly (apparently MASH it)
4. Push throttle gradually while RPM's rise (eventually hitting the kickdown switch as well, which I never did)
5. When tach stops, let off brake and keep throttle mashed.

Nope. And you only have to remove the front top cover to get the passenger airbox out to get the batwing out. This is my 2nd go around as my PCV went soon after I bought it. 3 hr job. Removing turbos adds an hour to that.

Yeah...I guess Audi gets 10hrs to do the PCV repair...I did it in 4hrs the first time...3 this time...the extra hour was getting turbos out. Not hard., just a lot of stuff in the way...Dealer wanted $10k to fix this..told them to eat bag of d*cks. I'll have it fixed for $2k and 4 hours of my time. Just conflicted on the screen. Many say just eliminate it, and do oil every 5k or so...I was doing that anyway.

Audi just extended the warranty on that PCV valve on 4.0TTs, so depending on the situation, some people may be eligible for reimbursement if they paid for replacement.

Mine failed at about 65K miles while the car was still under CPO warranty, so that's good, I guess...

So car is back up and running good. $2500 for SRM replacement turbos and TSB kit. I bought the new oil lines too, for $100, but wouldn't do that again. Mine were fine. Replaced turbos, screen and oil pressure relief valve. I was going to eliminate the screen, but elected to go ahead and install the new screen, as the original one lasted 84k miles and this one flows better and I plan to change oil every 4-5k miles now. About 4-5 hours of work all in, and worth it to save $10k. I would change this screen again in 30-40k miles.... just because.

Canada has a recall for the oil strainer / scraper that causes turbo failure - Audi Canada has indicated that the VIN in question doesn't have any outstanding issues - I am certain that they didn't actually change the oil strainer until 15 so I have asked how they determine what vehicles qualify...

I am not familiar with Mx records... a link would be appreciated!

Got it - I had seen the JHM kit and will likely install it sooner than later. It's interesting - as I said Audi has a recall in Canada for it but it is only specific cars... not sure what the difference would be as I would think that they were all built with the same strainer.

Thanks again!
