View Full Version : "After run coolant pump V51" failure?

Long time no post. Login issues now resolved. Thanks Erik!
In the last few weeks I have noticed that the familiar sound of the pump that recirculates coolant through the turbos is no longer there after shutoff. I always hear it, because I always raise the hood when I get home in the garage to let that heat dissipate more quickly. In summer I add 10 minutes with a floor fan blowing in through the front radiator.
Tech says that the intake manifold has to come off to access the pump to test it. I assume this would also enable access to the coolant temp sensors that cause the after run coolant pump to actuate. Loose wiring??
My now retired RS6 expert tech would have no problem with this. However, given that a new tech wouldn't be familiar, I worry about ending up with the intake manifold leaking or some other bad thing. Right now everything is running fine. No codes being thrown.
Should I worry about excessive turbocharger bearing heat coking the bearings? If so I may have to look for another option.

If you go through such an involved procedure with the fan after parking it, shouldn't be much of an issue to let her idle for 5 mins prior to shutting off. Basically emulating the turbo timer, letting turbos cool down. They will be fine.

Can test the pump without taking the intake off (+12&ground to its plug, by the passenger side fuel rail), but fairly sure it's dead if you say so. Common failure, many owners don't even notice. Can't replace without the intake R&R, though.
There's just one temp sensor for coolant, located behind the head on driver's side.

It's the pump

coolant leaks past the shaft of the pump and contaminates the circuit board electronics of the motor. Toast

Eventually, the Pump will start to leak and you'll end up with coolant running down the back of the engine. At this point, you must change the pump. This could take six weeks, or six years.


Any technician qualified to work on Audi's can perform this replacement. If I can do it I think most of you all can do it as well.
