Yes, I read this the other day.

I was surprised at his favorable comments towards the RS6, but then defaulting to the M5. Must have been a forced requirement to keep his job...LOL.

I'm too lazy to do the research so I'm wondering which car has a better resale value today.

I've not driven the M5, so I couldn't make a $/seat of the pants experience either...

Does anyone have or had both?

Looks like they are about the same for similar mileage. However if you go to the EAG site there are E39 M5s there for $70K plus...but these are mint low mileage ones (under 10K miles).

He chose E39 M5 because its cheaper to maintain? or did I get that wrong.

Driving feel and because it is the Roundel mag. I think he secretly wanted the RS6.

My mechanic has an M5 of the same year taken apart now, reworking the VANOS system. The seals can be replaced without replacing the entire VANOS system which is nice. The body on that car is in great shape as the owner has about 60k miles on it. Interior looks a bit rough. I have driven both, my Dad had the same model year M5. The RS6 sounds better and is quicker. Add a drop of wet on the road and the RS walks away. At speeds above 120 the M5 has an advantage but not much. The newer M5 V10 then pulled ahead of the prior V8, but the V8 M5 sounds better. I found the V10 M5 to be too quiet and blah sounding.

Mike.

I lost my copy of the Car and driver for that year, but you may recall the RS6 beat out the M5 and Merc. :)

Yes overall the RS6 came out #1 in that comparison but the E55 was much faster.

I had had one of those E55s back in the day. Fast as heck but handled like a farm truck. My 13 E63 has a much improved suspension. Great everyday driver and still faster yet

Wow....very cool aritcle... I love this line... 'the rs6 is hands down the better car...." I find it funny that it is the car he ended up driving everywhere, but would opt to own the e39.... yup, wanted to make sure he said the "right" thing to the BMW crowd.

For what its worth, I have owned both. I bought my M5 new in 2000 on European Delivery. It was a great car, but because they had to use the recirculating ball steering, it had a somewhat numb drive to it. No doubt it was super fun to drive in the 6 speed, but it is no where close to the car the RS6 is.

When I first drove the RS6 in early 2003, I knew I would get one someday.... I bought my Avus Silver RS6 with 11K on the odometer in 2004... Pretty much had at least one ever since...except for a couple breaks..some might call it a few brief lapses in judgement!

One day, this car will get its due... I really think that low mileage well sorted example will start to fetch big bucks...so hold on to them folks... the party is just getting started!

I agree....check out these two sites..the C5 RS6 is listed near the top for "best Audis ever built" ...granted this is before the C7s came out but the C7 does nothing for me

C5 RS6 #7 on this list out of 25
http://www.complex.com/sports/2011/11/the-25-greatest-audis-of-all-time/6

This one mentions the RS6 platform in general
http://www.wheels.ca/top-ten/10-best-audis-of-all-time/

I was asked by a young guy at work if my RS6 "was a special Euro only model"

FYI I was hooked as soon as I drove my cousin's Sportec equipped Avus Silver RS6 in 2004 but did not get one till a couple of years ago...
