I just got a quote from an indy shop for $3428 including thermostat, water pump and resealing the front engine. I would not consider that reasonable. I can do it myself but I don't have the time.

What do you consider reasonable?

take into consideration your zip code and cost of living

I would say they are close considering your zip

in AZ......it would be 2500 easy for a qualified Audi Indy to do the work

"resealing"

I have a job quote/price that was just done, down to the dollar. My indy let me buy my own parts. I bought the Blau Parts advance kit for T belt AND advance kit for Valve Cover Gasket job. Again, they let me buy my own parts there (rare) and it cost me...679.30 shipped to my house (a good deal that my "guy" said he probably would not have been able to piece together at his cost). Then I paid for labor. BUT a piece of old seal fell into the oil pan so they did an oil change. End of the day, with them charging me for the oil change (probably at a discounted rate, good oil - Motul Specific) and the labor on the other two pieces of the job they charged $2k even. So no, at $3428, I dont think you are getting a good deal but you aren't getting hosed.

Again though, what is "resealing" the front?

Not $3500. I just got another for " ballpark $2000". That seems more reasonable.

You get full kit from Blauparts, $1k....$700-1k labor, something like that.

As long as it's put together right...but that "resealing" line is horse crappy.

I'm fairly sure that they meant "replacing all the front end seals" by that "resealing" term.

And then put another $1500 aside for the things that need to be done while it is apart...
