View Full Version : If you sold your RS6, what would be your next car?

Hi folks,

After my Chief Financial Officer took a fancy to a Cayman S, I suddenly got permission to look at other vehicles. Or maybe she got tired of driving me to the shop, not sure...

I have had my RS6 since 2008, bought it with 29,000 miles on it, now around 95,000. Mods include:

Hella Smoked Lenses in rear
L10 torque converter - preventative while engine was out.
Hotchkiss Sport front and rear
SR Hybrid turbos, larger injectors, waste gates and intercooler
KW V3's
Decatted downpipes
BBS CHW's
19" Continental EC as of last Tuesday
MTM TCU
Custom ECU (Solo Motorsports Atlanta)
470hp / 500 ftlbs torque (Mustang Dyno at Solo)
RSN-E, Bluetooth
ADR back box to connect Valentine to display in dash

I'm thinking 25K would be a good starting asking price, but really don't know what to look at next. The Cayman's are really nice, but also really small.

What other toys would you be looking at for a car that would put a smile on your face every time you drive it?

Another RS6.

EDIT:
On a more serious note - no idea what to change it to, really. Porsches don't make sense at all, unless it's a turbo (which is WAY more $$$). Nothing else in the same price range compares in terms of versatility. If we consider a wider price range - well, there's a bunch of modern fast AWD cars, but none of them are that charismatic.
I'd probably look at 3.2 DSG (or maybe even MT!) A3 + turboing it (for a daily city driver) - just for the heck of it. But then again, I have a pretty weird approach when choosing cars. :)

Nice looking RS6 and mods! Amazed the trans has held up with that much extra power, you must drive it nice, sounds like a lot of highway miles you've racked up.

My current choice would be a 2013+ S6. They look fairly good, lots of tech and super nice interior, plus V8TT that you can put a tune on for some serious power, with a much better trans.

Since we got the RS6, a few vehicles have passed through, mostly by choice of the CFO.
One thing the CFO has maintained is that the RS6 is not leaving, ever! She seems to have a special connection to that Audi. God bless her soul for seeing it my way.

I think the only thing I would sell the RS6 for is another RS6 (wagon only). See directly below:

A 6sp RS6!

Or I suppose I'd drive a 4.0T S6 + some mods.

The reason I got an RS6 was because it's unique, usable, comfortable, understated, and of course its performance. I can't really think of anything similar, even now 13 years later.

What do you think of the GT-R? I know you were playing with one not too long ago.

My reason for selecting the CL65 is I would like a little better ride and a little more quiet and a little more comfortable seats over the RS6 as well as the ability to make much more power. :D
Still love my RS6 though even though all it is right now is a garage ornament. lol Wish that trans would hurry up and get here.

First I wouldn't sell the RS6, even if it meant I had to sleep in it instead of a house. Even _if_, god forbid, it got totaled, I'd buy it back and use the parts to restore one of the other RS6's out there in need of donor parts.

That said, during the time where both donor and receiver were down, I'd be looking at a built Jeep. Seen some that have had full engine swaps and big axle go-anywhere builds, that are just spectacular (supercharged Hemi's, etc...). The Rennsport has ruined me for other cars, and after driving the wife's lifted Jeep, I do like being able to see above the rear brake lights of the car in front of me in traffic here.

Wow, that interior is surprisingly low rent for a $71k Cadillac. Except for the decent seats, of course.

I would agree with gauge cluster and center stack but as far as doors and things like that. I don't feel it's much different than when I owned my RS4 and would look at B7 A4's and be like man what did i get for my money besides seats, a trans and an engine (except with that one I got great gauges too).

B8/8.5 S4, D3 S8 or C7 S6, since I already have a P-car ;) Try a 911 C4S if AWD is a must-have.911's are wonderfully live-able everyday sports cars; I put 10k miles on mine in 6 months with nary a complaint. Can't say the same for my RS6, I'm afraid.

Actually, first-gen R8's are starting to dip into the high 60's/low 70's... jussayin'

I want an S8, but forgetaboutit.....I want an RS7, but forgetaboutit.

So....if my RS6 does not survive it's surgery.......I have begun looking for a replacement.

As mentioned above the M2 is interesting...but there may be some BS 'over sticker' markup BS.......just like the very nice new Mustang GT350 I looked at but they wanted a $15,000 markup! I offered to buy it on the spot for sticker but no...They dropped the markup to 10k last week...LOL....

So yesterday I went to Audi of Oneonta. I drove the New A4...they really stepped things up on that line of cars, the engine is 2.0 L turbo 252hp/272fp much in line with the old 2.7 L S4 of old. The transmission is an s-tronic dual clutch 7 speed. B&O is 755 watts. The one I drove had the fancy virtual cockpit which is very nice. It's suspension is very good and the car is QUIET! The one I drove has the First Edition package which has vented seats but alas no massage seats are available. This is a possible 'next car' but the new S4 is still out there and to be seen.....No lease numbers are set up for the new A4 yet.

I drove an S3 (did not have the electromagnetic suspension but otherwise loaded), but it's very nice as well. It's a 2016 so it lacks the fancy electronic upgrades of the 2017 A4 but the power train is very nice. It has same engine as the Golf R but only available with the Auto transmission. The S3 would be a fun car...lease number was not that bad....was trying to get a better trade number on my A4 cab....

I drove an A3 convertible. The one I drove was the lower tier model, so it lacked power seats, etc, I was not that impressed over my current 08, nearly paid for second hand A4 cab, The A3 is 8 years newer with newer transmission, little more power, nav, etc....but not worth it at this point.

Just to mention this....I noted they had a nice blue loaded 2015 S5 coupe with black and silver sport seats, etc....and it has been lingering on their lot for more than a YEAR. I had noted it on their website about a year ago. I speculated on the s5 forum that I could not understand why the sports differential was an option in that model year? It's 750 bucks of something like that, maybe 1500, what ever, so the asked the salesman why the it has not sold? EXACTLY because it did not have the sports diff! LOL.....I am not sure it can be discounted enough to sell, I cannot image that someone would buy this "new" car who's warrantee is ticking away (one year down) and it's seals are sitting and getting ready to begin to weep......I was considering driving that but they would not lease it since it's a 2015....I am going to stick with warrantee period leases only.....:)

I too cannot believe the sports differential is an "option" on S model cars. Very silly indeed. FYI, the new car warranty begins at the DOFU, or date of first use, not the model year.

Aronis
April 6th, 2016, 03:23
That's interesting, my first "extended warrantee" which was supposed to add additional years to my original warrantee ended up be dated from the date of car manufacture and it time out just after the end of my 4 year lease! Ended up buying another extended warrantee which was time from the date I bought the extension. If I recall it was good till 104,000 miles (I think I had 54000 on the car). The first extension just gave me enough milage ( I think it was 2 years/24,000) or something but the way the timing worked out it was up sooner than I thought.

So for the 2015 S5 I figure the warrantee is already ticking away. LOL......

Mike

PS the M2 is looking very nice......watch the videos.....6 speed manual.....etc.....

I have an '07 SL 65 Diamond Silver Metallic over Berry Red. Love it!! Fast and smooth like silk does not even begin to describe. Don't get me wrong, I love my RS6 and its a true classic (even if the world doesn't know it yet), but those V12 AMG cars are not even in the same stratosphere as RS6... and how could they be being 4 cylinders and decade + worth of technology up on them?? .... not to mention a real transmission & interior makes RS6 look like Fred Flintstone should be sitting in it. I've had a few convertibles b4 but generally consider myself not a convert guy but with the top down in that V12 on nice day you just feel like you did something right in life. Mine just turned 30k other day. I've had 3 years, it's loaded, sticker = just at $200k I paid $58. It may have gone down a bit since but the 07-08 cars stay a bit higher than the older and low mile ones seem to stay pretty firm. Last week on tv Barret Jackson I think was palm beach, I saw I think was '05 SL65 silver blk with 50k go for $28k!! Next to no action. I would have bought in a heartbeat. All those AMG V12 cars will go up in price sometime to some extent I'm sure of it.... RS6 too, just when, and even 100% up on $12k isn't such a big #.

SVT... I almost feel obligated to tell the MB / AMG forums you're coming. I like those CLs... its like a fortress inside. The CL is built on S classe chassis and when you're in back seat you know it, ingress and egress is really no issue with that looong door and one-push button seat forward. Its like the best of a coupe and full size sedan all in one. Almost got one cpl. times b4. You might want to start a revolving rear tire fund unless you drive like grandma. Ever turn traction control off take heed to that big hazard light that will stay permanently lit on your cluster and you do so at your own risk. All that RWD bias & weight ever gets away from you - you got big issues and quick. I know the trans are rated high, they use unit in numerous period AMG cars that are frequently tuned high like E55s but I think 1,100 hp or at least tq would put it about at its limit. You want to implode it like your RS6 before you even have fun with it? Its going to be plenty plenty fast... just cruise it for a while and get a real feel for it, then whatever you ever do to it you'll recognize and appreciate it even more. Just my opinion. I'm about to pull trigger on a 2010 S65 pearl white over tan with premium leather Designo pkg. = diamond stitch & everything is leather or alcantera, its normal wheelbase but has executive entertainment rear with TVs, reclining seats with footrest, all seats indiv. heated & AC ventilated.... I'm AMG V12 addicted now!! Taking it to Montreal GP for the AMG fest and beatdown, they should be close to wrapping championship up..... again.... by that point. Oh yeah, drive it even moderate hard and it will make RS6 seem like a Prius gas wise, gas needle will pretty much literally move if you even leave it idling for 10-15 mins.

LaserSVT
April 23rd, 2016, 19:33
Played with it on the drive back. Most of the drive the cruise was set at 90-95 and a few times it beat up on some other performance cars while it had a trunk full of luggage and coolers and 4 adults in it. It averaged 17.9 MPG for the trip and the Audi could never get that. As for the trans, not worried about it. When Speedriven does their other stuff they will also build the trans. :)

Very spectacular car and I love them. Friend just got one and its amazing. Problem is they have a 20-30K markup on them. I want to see what happens with them over the next year. I may buy one to play a tiny bit with and then store for a year or so and make some money like the Ford GT cars.

Solid piece of engineering and performance and then some. Built to take on domestic muscle like the ACR Viper, Z28 Camaro, & Z06 Corvette. I like the exclusivity of the FPC which you usually only get when you purchase a Ferrari/Maserati/Lotus type of car. Sounds great on the video and I'm certain even better in person.

Yes the mustang GT350 looks great, they had one locally and wanted $15,000 dealer mark up.The sticker was 57k, but with mark up 72k....that's S6 territory. Not going to pay a dealer markup on any car.

But what about a 2 seater, big V8, 58K.....yes a vette....LOL....but the lease numbers stink! :)

CTS-Wagon. My other toy is a 996tt.... gets driven more than the RS6 does. A4 is my daily commuter. I'll never sell the RS6. I would pick up a newer gen RS6/RS7 in a couple of years, or an S6/S7 and tune the shit out of it. Such a better trans. The S7 is considerably larger than the C5 RS6.

My daily is #4 RS6

My play around is #2 RS6

My play around/garage queen is #1 RS6

I have lots of rotors sitting on the shelf. Along with a built 517 trans.

If I didn't need a car to get to work (I suppose I could take the subway but it's 1.5hrs of nonsense each way vs 45mins of nonsense driving) I would sell both my cars and get something like a GT3 or a DB9/Vanquish. There's an '05 Vanquish S in Virginia for a paltry $70k right now and I could certainly get used to driving that!

Ooh, that's so hard. I love the DB9 and the DBS powerplant is obviously superior but I don't like the aerodynamic add-ons so much. But it comes with a manual gearbox. The Vanquish on the other hand, carries quite possibly the coolest name in all of car-dom, heralded James Bond's return to the Aston marque and looks downright devilish. I suppose I'd have to drive both and decide, but I reckon I'd choose the DBS for the gearbox alone. I drove a 2008 DB9 Sports Pack with the 6spd auto transaxle and was pretty disappointed; I imagine the Vanquish's auto would be similar.

I've always liked the vanquish & agree is one of the coolest named cars ever.....just today I took a ride in a sweet pearl white DBS 6 speed. The gearbox is very forgiving and it has some nice extras like matte carbon fiber trim interior in places along the door cards & carbon diffuser, ceramic rotors, piano black dash trim pieces and sweet aluminum shift nob and other aluminum dash accents that contrast nicely w/ the piano black. Exhaust sounds mean as hell, 7450 miles on odometer 10,000 mile service already done and there's an Aston umbrella in the trunk.

Looking at the pics of that Vanquish S you linked to the interiors are very similar but one difference I noticed is that w/ the DBS you also insert the Key into the dash where the clock is on the vanquish S, while the vanquish S is 5 years older than the DBS and does seem more dated I still love them both. After a lot of deliberation, I have decided to sell and move on. I have put way too much money into it during the time I have had it, and while I consider it all worthwhile investment, in order to take it to the next level I would need to replace the trans. It would then be an easy re-tune to extract a lot more HP out of her, but....

It will be properly posted in the for sale section sometime this week, and I will only have it listed there for a while before moving on to ebay, craigslist, autotrader, etc.

Someone hand me a tissue, this feels bad but it is time for me to move on....

Did you not love the dead on center steering on the 550? LOL its about 3 degrees of NOTHING in the middle but predictable off center! My M2 does not suffer from that issue.

The new Misano RS6 needs my tlc in several areas as well. So everybody please let me fix it and don't come over and buy it from me. I would like to drive it a few years.

A8tt or S8 will be my next car. That is a fact! Dynamic drive select and 4.0tt were a perfect match

..lol..i'm seriously the luckiest RS6 owner on the planet it appears.. i keep seeing horror stories from some owners ..when i bought mine at 98k it had a slipping trans , fixed it 5k miles later with a level 10 TC and a used trans and the car is now at 133k since last march and the only CEL that has come on is for the SAI pump and i clear it every 2k miles or so ..at one point i bought a new '09 subie STi in 2008 and it was in the shop before 4k miles and again at 8k and again at 15k ..i finally got rid of that gas guzzling lemon and found my way into a VW Phaeton that was issue free for 60k till a deer totaled it ..but that turned me into an audiholic and i have loved not seeing my mechanic since april..lol ..now added a winter beater and future swap donor 2.7 6 spd A6 and am having a blast with it too..lol .

I read up on the new TTRS while ago and seems very cool even if semi-hefty $60k+ base for a midget car. I think it would be a tough call bw it and new Cayman/Boxster S. Similar price, TT has one more cylinder and little more horsepower and AWD and lil quicker launch and styling esp. front way better than previous IMO and def. rarer than Porsche although the RS badge def. doesn't carry the same level of rarity and panache as did back in the CR RS6 days (are new RSs models still fully made by Quattro GmBH? Idk). Porsche is little lighter - Cayman anyway, RWD can have its fun advantages and well.... its a Porsche... and there is no substitute. I doubt the Audi chassis and suspension would match the compliant yet appropriately rigid butteryness of the Porsche secret sauce. And can get Porsche in stick, TTRS I think not but not sure. Both should have super interiors but only seen TTRS pics.

I can imagine it being a deal where I talked myself into the TTRS bc of cool / rarity factor but after driving back to back I might come home in the Porsche. If there are any TTRSs in my area for tests I'm going to try one out. 400 awd hp in that little cupcake must be fun and turn up the turbos = really fun. The Cayman/Boxster Ss have variable vane geometry in the turbos, the non Ss no and makes big difference, not sure about TTRS.... could look it up but I'd rather post half-baked thoughts and questions right about now.

Apples for (near apples) : C7 S6, C63 AMG, Gen2 CTS-V (wagon?)

Weekend toy instead : 911, Lotus Exige S, TTRS maybe

If I could justify it, the TTRS has been on my short list for a while now. The exhaust note of the Audi inline-5 is heavenly. Only gripe is the transverse configuration. I don't know why but it just puts me off everytime.
