View Full Version : Afternoon chuckle

Have had this for a few months, but thought it would be a good chuckle for those on the forum that undertake their own efforts to repair the beast.

I am swapping out the fuel pump on the one ride here and thought I'd see what an OEM replacement would set me back from the local stealership. More than I even anticipated.... :lovl:

Just wow...that pump should really come with a condom.:nono:. I'm sure the conversation went like this: "Fuel pump, sure we have a fuel pu...wait, you said RS6? Umm, I'll have to adjust that price.... please hold..."

I guess I better keep my parts car around.

My pricing for those is $18.29 and $627.90

Even with the exchange rate, your dealer is still stretching the sphincter very far.

That's in the ballpark of what I found when looking at OEM replacement. Went with Bosch 044 and adapters instead. ~$200 USD total. A little noisy but I hardly notice it anymore.

One side-note here... people looking at 044's for replacement, be sure you get a legit one. There have been fake ones that look pretty damn convincing (right box, even markings that look right) making their way in to the market... they are from China (surprise). Guys on the UrS4/S6 forums have seen this... so just make sure you get it from a legit supplier or search around to make sure you have a legit one.

what adaptor did you need to use?

you can also change the check valve which will quiet it down a bit. People were using a valve from a BWM pump to quiet it down IIRC.

And as I recall, I don't believe it is a direct retrofit...so be prepared to do some "creative" modifications...

Only "creative" stuff was getting the new pump to fit in the stock bracket. 044 is larger in diameter compared to OEM.

+1 on the legit 044. Watch out for the Chinese knockoffs.

Right, pretty much what I meant. I knew it wasn't a 100% straight forward install, but couldn't remember how much was needed to be done to make it fit. Not a ton of work...but could be daunting for someone who is not terribly adept at working on these cars, and would be flustered, when they got it apart, only to see it doesn't fit, and think they got the "wrong" pump.

That's why you order one of these....(application based of course) - OR - drop by your uncles machine shop and have him whip up an adapter....

Both of those are in-tank brackets. I replaced the inline pump with the 044. If you are converting to a single pump then that would be the route to go.

Good details, thanks bethridg! I'll add all this to my website when done.

Bit confused; here it's stated the 044 is larger diameter, but two other threads talk about using padding to get the 044 to fit in stock bracket? I'll try and FOB up a nice custom holder.

The OE fuel pump is indeed smaller in diameter but has a hard plastic isolator to take up the extra space. That isolator will not fit the larger diameter 044. The combined diameter of the isolator and the OE pump is larger than the 044 alone. So yeah, something is needed to take up the room to fit the 044 to the factory bracket. <strike>Wish I had taken pictures...</strike>

Thanks fellas, much appreciated!

Bigglez, confirm ordering sources for in/out fuel line adapters? Do you need new/extra 3/8 high pressure fuel lines, worth replacing?

I can think of a few good home insulating foams, or exercise mat foams, that would make a clean fit around the 044 to the stock bracket.

I see on Amazon they have brackets with padding for the 044, but figure it might not bolt up well to the existing bracket holes.

The stock bracket is glued or epoxied to the outside of the fuel tank. No bolts. You could cut it out with a dremel or similar and maybe find some space against the body to mount an aftermarket bracket. But then you have to contend with brake & I believe DRC lines if you still have them.
