View Full Version : Logs - Trans temp, TC, seems good mostly...

lswing
June 7th, 2015, 20:27
Ok, so I went for a quick drive. Got the car warmed up, headed out on a 92 degree day here. The cooling was actually better than expected, glad to see. At the very end I do see a random spike from the ATF temp sensor that has been throwing the error code, so that might just be the problem. Highlighted in the upper grid group is a run going 70mph in 5th, then dropping down to 4th with some gas; and you can see how it increased the ATF temp. Things cooled down quick though. Can anyone spot anything else that may be odd with the TC lock/regulate/input-output?

I'm guessing that when the tc is locked, you where slightly accelerating? Looks like it, based on rpms. What is the last figure? Maybe it's the little screen I'm looking at it from, but I don't see what that is.

I would really consider getting that sensor replaced.

Thanks. Yep, will replace the G93 sensor when I get a chance. Need to source one as its part of the valve body wiring.

I mainly wanted to see that temps were ok, and TC was locking up. Last column in table is just stall speed, and gets cutoff on small screens.

Actually TC locks up on cruising I thought, and is in regulate mode when decel/accelerate, open when stopped. Amount Tc regulates varies on rpm and sensed torque, something like that.

That very last number, 141 temp, random out of the blue, creating the temp sensor intermittent that shows on a scan I'm sure, no CEL.

Does your TC ever lock in 5th gear

Good point. It should be locked more I would think. This was on slight rolling hills so maybe it didn't lock since I wasn't steady with the throttle, or the temp sensor can also mess with locking. I'll look over the extended logs. Downside of not locking enough would be higher temps and lower fuel economy I believe.

Edit; Yes, locks in 5th for extended time when level throttle. Didn't know it locked in 4th?

Edit2; I'm impressed with the atf cooling system. On a 90+ degree day it quickly lowers the fluid temp after acceleration, well within a safe range.

Closed in 5th below, then opening with feathering of throttle. What I see that's odd is that it's locking when I shift to 4th in the above log, and I thought it was only supposed to lock in 5th.

^^^Interesting how it takes until about mid up to third gear for the output speed of the TC to catch up with the input speed. Next time I might log Torque as that is an option. But TC seems to be working as it should by regulating the power from the engine into the trans.

This is a 0-70 MPH log above, and TC activity and temps seem reasonable. Interesting how near the end, what really bumps up the ATF temp is the easing up or feathering of throttle in 5th as the TC then goes from closed to regulate. Maybe increased load while cruising in 5th as I'd think ATF would heat up more under acceleration.

OK, dumb question, but if the TC is in Closed mode why are the input and output speeds not the same? I thought closed meant locked up, as in same engine and input/output speed.

If anyone else could chime in or get a similar log it would be much appreciated. Categories are in the Trans Params section instead of Engine Params in VCDS. Blocks 1, 7, 10 are what I chose, it's easy to find.

Input and output speeds are for the transmission, right? Not the TC? The TC input and output speeds are "Engine RPM" and "Input RPM". The numbers in the logs seem to support that.

Also, I logged mine a few times before doing the manual conversion. The TC would lock up in most of the gears if I remember right. Definitely 3rd, 4th, and 5th anyway. Maybe not 1st and 2nd, I can't recall for sure.

Thanks for clarifying, makes sense.

OK, so brings up one more question. The gearing of the trans in 5th makes the RPM output greater than the input it appears. When accelerating in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd you can see the RPM output lags way behind the input, and finally catches up by 4th; I'm hoping this is not slipping of the trans and just due to gearing or the act of shifting?

Edit; Looking at other parts of the logs, when taking off from 1st gear with light throttle, the input and output RPMs show the same variation, so I'm assuming it's the gearing of the trans.

That would the the different gear ratios of each gear. You could use the gear ratios to determine what the input-to-output RPM ratio should be and determine any slippage from that, but at a glance your numbers seem reasonable.

Sounds about right. Just in case you didn't see previous threads, I'm looking over things because I'm getting a soft code "G93 Temp Sensor Intermittent". I've had this before on a previous trans, stupid sensor is small and simple, but I guess I get to replace one again. Just making sure things are operating reasonably for now.
