It is a version of the same trans but it won't bolt up.

NO. Different bellhousing to permit use of a larger diameter torque convertor. The ONLY engine the RS6 5Tip tranny will bolt up to is the RS6 engine and vice versa.

plus some other mods, at least according to Audi... :)

"The following modifications have beenmade to the previous transmission:
• Reinforced transfer gear and
transmission housings
• Increased clutch pressure
• Brake “D” reinforced (one additional
coated disc)
• Reinforced spur gear drive splines
(modified material)
• Converter diameter increased
from 260 to 280 mm "

perhaps Tozo could tell us more about it....i don't know however whether the above is in regards to the regular A6 4.2 or the S6, if it would be in regards to the regular A6 4.2 then chances could be that the S6 one could be closer to the RS6 one, less the Torque Coverter diameter...

It has the same trans as the W12 cars right? http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/audi-rs-6-first-drive-review Isn't that what the original C&D mag article said way back in the day.

Yes, but that was the Euro D2 W12.

It's not the same trans but similar rather, the final drive ratios differ.
