For all you guys that are waaay smarter than me....I notice that when ever I drive in Sport mode, my car "Kicksdown"
all the time but when I'm just in "D" mode, I feel it almost never. Is this something to do with the "Chip" or is it me?
Has anyone else experienced this?

Are you talking about downshifts while slowing down? I have had rather significant downshifts in D both before and after the MTM chip. If anything, it's a little smoother after being chipped.

No it is very smooth I think. This only happens when I'm doing "spirited driving" and say, I really punch it from a standstill.
In "D" mode no "kickdown" happens at all but in "S" mode, the car's "kickdown feature" seems to activate at around 3500 rpms during
acceleration. It doesn't happen all the time but it does happen and only during "sport" mode and only in hard acceleration during
"spirited driving".

Standard OEM feature of 'Sport' mode. It will downshift to a lower gear to put the revs up. You need to be in D if you want to get in to a tall gear for fuel sipping.

Cool...Thanks Biggz! I didn't know if that was normal or not and kept forgetting to ask on the forum. I remember
the first time it happend, it scared the S@#T out of me!! The whole car shook, like an artillery round had just hit it.

yea some mornings i would put it in sport by accident out of my driveway and get through a couple stops signs and be like what is up with this thing and then be like, oh, put it in drive moron

Do your revs then rise or drop? This is what my car would do when it would jump from 3rd to 4th under WOT with no shift. Around 3,500-4,000 rpm in 3rd, bam, revs down to 2,000 in 4th gear. Maybe not, but if you think it is try WOT in tip, 3rd gear.

OP was referring to the situation whereupon you're coasting along on a main street cruising at 35-40mph and want to be in 3rd or 4th gear with RPM's around 1800-2000 and instead the 'Sport' mode kicks down to second gear to bring the RPM's up in to the mid 3000's. It's the OEM programming of the TCU done to keep the drive 'in the zone' so to speak. I rarely if ever use Sport mode because of the sudden shock of downshift when you don't anticipate such. Much prefer std drive mode for easy days and tip for when I want to control shift.

Just making sure. I drive the exact same, only use Sport for 0-100 launches (kph of course). Drive for cruising around, Tip most of the time and certainly for any sport driving. Sport is simply too erratic for me.

Interesting to see how the adaptive shifting picks up my habits in Tip, and it applies them to Drive, sure feels like it. After driving around in Tip a lot, keeping the shift points higher, Drive then mimics that...

i kind of like that adaptive shifting, for the last couple of days i have been driving really soft, so now it goes into 5th gear at already 38-40mph. I too noticed the thing with Tip being replicated to D mode for a while after.

This I need to check for. My car seems to hold each gear as long as possible.

That would be redline:)

You mean check to see if you are chipped in the TCU?

Sport will hold the gear forever at higher rpm's, I basically never use it. Drive will shift depending on throttle position. Mostly stick with Tip myself, and really interesting to see the computer learn, maybe takes 1-4 weeks of driving in Tip, and Drive has the same shift points.

Yes, I need to check for a chipped TCU, thank you.

Regardless of how easy on the throttle I am in town- in an attempt to save a little fuel and get an earlier upshift, it still wants to hold out each gear. Having never been in or even driven the 6 until I recently purchased mine, I have no idea of what's normal or not.

It does shift very smooth though. I have no idea it's even shifting other than the change in the exhaust (SE exhaust) and the drop of the tach needle.

It's been years, but I think driving in Drive with light/normal throttle you'll get shifts around 2400-2500 rpm stock, and chipped seems to move the point up to 2700-2800. Maybe holds the point a bit longer before shifting as you mentioned.

The shifts themselves are a bit quicker too, but impossible to tell unless you had the car stock then chipped it like I did, and even then it's minimal. Get in there and see, you should be able to tell the tcu has been opened, and the mtm is a solder in chip, not sure of the other tcu tunes such as GIAC.

Thanks for all the helpful comments guys. I think I'm going to use mostly "Drive and Tip" mode
and just use "Sport" mode only on "Special Occasions"........

So I'm coming to this party late, but who even sells the MTM tip chip anymore? Is it still around 250?

It's on another thread, but Canada only now, Horchaus or something like that. Just ship them your TCU...

I found out later that the previous owner of my RS6 had the MTM TCU chip installed at Hoppen Motorsports in Florida but they are no longer in business. Prior to that information, I was all set to ship my TCU chip to Horchaus MTM/Canada as I think they are the only MTM "Game left in town". Forum member mtmscs4 forwarded me this info "way back when" I started inquiring about this so I now forward you this same info below:

the procedure to remove the TCU can be found at:
http://www.rs6.com/showthread.php/21...ht=tcu+removal

It is quite easy.

The cost of the procedure is 150 CAD + taxes (if applicable) and app. 30 to 70 CAD for shipping the TCU back (70 CAD for an overnight).

If you overnight it to us, just declare it as 50$ (rework/repair under warranty) so we don't lose anytime and money with customs.

We usually can ship back same/next day.

let me know if you need more info!

Hey fellas I just contacted Horchaus and they will send an MTM EEprom out for the TCU but no longer do installs. At least the mail in kind. Do any members know of a place that I can get one installed. I am ready to order the chip. Just need somewhere to install it. In Colorado would be great but nation wide is fine just so I can get this done.

Find someone good, I lost a TCU either to a bad chip or bad solder, cost $500 for another one. Maybe look locally for a shop that does soldering or computer repair?

I agree with the quality over cost. I just got the dang thing. Still have paper tags on it. Would hate to have it down for an extended amount of time already. If I had not already been living with a fatal case of mod disease I would leave the car alone and not risk it haha.
