trunk and spare tire

I was looking in my trunk and considering getting a full size spare, which I measured and would fit, but the problem is, if you look towards the bottom of the hole on the sides, there are posts that stick out and some of them are a bolt with a nut connected to it. Does anyone know what these are holding up (if anything at all), or could I cut them off. My 2000 A6 has the same space for the spare, but does not have those bolts and bars sticking out.

If you are talking about the ones on the front side, they are the Bolts & nuts holding on the Central valves just on the other side of the sheet metal there.

There cylindrical tubes (two) about 3~4" around and 6" or so long and mount to the forward part of the wheel well on the outside. The DRC suspension is cross connected through these valves, Front Right to Rear Left and Front Left to Rear Right. For those that Dump the DRC system they dump these valves along with all of the DRC struts, and to make a clean aftermarket install you remove all of the cross connecting hydraulic (brake Tubing) lines.

Do those other blunt posts that are around the sides, over on the right side from the screw/bolts serve any purpose?

I think they're just there to act as tire stops for the N. America spare tire to help keep it from moving around. They are removable as they are studs with a nut on the outside then pull them through from the inside. You will then need to seal the holes with Goop or Silicone or something. I used Goop on the bolt holes from the Central Valves but left the Studs even though I don't carry the spare but they do seal the holes.

I tried to put the stock 18 RS tire in the well and it wouldn't fit.

Cause apparently I have a spare 245/45/18 RS tire and rim around (actually, I have 12 :/) and too much time on my hands, here is what it looks like trying to stuff it in the well of the beast. It don't fit....period....

Your 2000 A6 was fit for 17's max.....

905084, did you remove the posts in your spare tire well to try and fit your tire. In my a6 I have put an 18 inch 235/40 tire and wheel in there with no problem.
