Hi all,

Went for a spin today and noticed a whining sound and occasionally ticking sound coming from around the rear wheel area, not constant, but for little periods.
Sometimes suddenly louder.
Noticed also on full throttle a huge hesitation, couldnt get more than 3000 rpm, gearchanges are smooth, but couldnt reach kickdown.
Didnt had a Phone with me to record the sound.

Looks like fuelpump?, cos of the area the whining is coming from, and the hesitation?
Dont know the above is typical for fuelpump faillure...?

I haven't had one go on the RS6 yet either but from your description of the Hesitation and noise together it sounds likely.

Started to take out the fuel filter, but cant get the number 3 out cos the nut on the other side is turning along with the bold and hits what i think is a drc pipe, tried some wd40 on it...
The space im working in wont help either...and dont like to work underneath with just my head.
Looks like the filter(Bosch) has never been replaced.

Unfortunately the new fuelfilter didnt solve it, still making odd noises from the rear wheel area now and then.
So next step would be one of the fuelpumps...:( no DIY im afraid...
Will the fuelpump throw up codes? beside the starvation of fuel to the engine on full throttle?

Do i need special tools the replace the fuel pump inside the fueltank?

Pressure test the car firsts. Fuel starvation might throw a code something like maximum pressure exceeded, do you have any codes? After 3k Rpms does it feel like the car hits a wall just gives up accelerating?

My car had severe hesistation out of no where. Drove 100% perfect before. The secondary external fuel pump shit the bed. Car would barely run though. Swapped out to a Bosch 044 and all is well now.

Could a bad external fuel pump make the inner fuelpump noisey?

Does the Bosch 0 580 254 040 In Tank Fuel Pump fit the RS6C5 and drops in with no mods required?

What's the code for......? Fuel pump control, maybe? Curious....

Typically in a push/pull system the main pump is external. The transfer pump is in the tank. A failing main pump could cause the transfer/push pump to become noisy by over stressing it. Debatable, but it is a tandem system. And must work in unison.

For me it's easy to diag a failing pump, and have done many, many in all sorts of cars. They just get noisy and eventually the car runs poorly. Typically can take years for it to happen to the extent an engine will lost power. But when it does....

I'd expect numerous codes-- random misfires, O2'd beyond limit. Obviously be sure to check the fuel pressure on a drive. If the car is a daily driver then replace the fuel filter every year.

Having a tuned RS6 with a marginal fuel system is asking for burned pistons and valves...

Which groups do i have to log to find out which pump it is?

Here's the in tank pump module: 4B0 906 087BF, Fuel Pump Assembly
VDO makes it. No idea of an "upgrade" pump for it..

If the external pump is noisy, does not have an even sound, or fuel pressure flutters or drops at WOT, will need replacement.

Can't speak of of which groups to log...sometimes i just scroll thru noting the various live data values...let us know when you figure it out?
