Greetings- Started up my car this morning,( was running, shifting fine yesterday) and noticed that my CEL was on. Put it into reverse and it hedged a bit, and then backed up OK, but felt wierd. Put it in to drive, and it hesitated again and the engine sounded like it was straining a bit. I took off slowly, noticing that all of my gear shift indicators P,R,N,1,2 were all lit up at the same time. RPMs seem consistant with MPH, but the car is bogging down when driven.I pulled back into my driveway right away and ran VagCom and came up with 17114 Gear Ratio Monitoring w/ PO730-35-00 Incorrect Gear Ratio code. As stated previously, the car has been running fine, transmission shifting fine, what would cause this from just sitting overnight, no prior symtoms of any problems? I'm going to crawl underneath shortly and check the level of my transmission fluid, but if that is good, what next??? Thanks, Paul

did the code disappear after restarting the car? if not, try to delete it with vagcom and see if it comes back, if so it is most likely the F125 switch...had the same issue one morning, restarted the car and it went away, so far so good, it didn't come back...there is nothing wrong with your fluid level, i wouldn't even bother checking it, check maybe for leaks, otherwise no.

Pretty much the same thing. What I am trying to determine is if my slushbox is "toast" or are there a few more things that I can check. The Tiptronic does not seem to work at all, and as I said previously, all of the gear selections are illuminated at once. I'm not driving the car until I need to perform another test or something. So, now comes the big question, If I can determine that the transmission needs fixing or replacement , should I go with a O1E six speed or another slush box? I'm fairly confident that I can do the conversion myself, albeit with a little help from my friends , as I used to convert automatic Volvos and BMWs to four and five speeds back in the late 70's, early eighties. But, I might be open to throwing in another automatic if I could find one cheap enough.
Two years ago I decided that I wasn't going to do the O1E transmission swap (when the Auto was still working fine) and bought a 1978 Porsche 911 SC instead. I've been gathering parts (needed a piston) for the Porsche , and planned on starting the engine build this month, now this happens. YUK! To make things worse, my nearly life long problem with my lower back has apexed, Orthopedic Doctor took me of my pain meds and gave me a weeks worth of Prednisone in preparation for an MRI this week. I'm hobbling around like a CRANKY old man , with two broken cars, Help! Thank you, Paul, Providence, RI

if the gearbox was perfectly working before this happened i'd say there is nothing wrong with it and since you do not have the dreaded TC code your tranny is alright....so what errors do you get now? if you still have the PRNDS all lit up then it could be the tiptronic switch under the gear lever plate...

post a copy of the errors you get...

I too would say it's not the trans, both of my failed trans exhibited slipping and clunking, never a single code.

You check all wiring from TCU, and check TCU in passenger footwell to make sure there's no water or corrosion?

Don't even think twice about going manual with a bad back. I got this car so that I could paddle shift, clutches are a nightmare for my bad back...

Do you have a full vagcom reader, Ross-tech brand software? Do a full scan with details...

All the gear lights in the Instrument cluster just mean the TCU/ECU have put the tranny in safe mode. I think it is put in 3rd gear when in safe mode so if you try to start out the there is a lot of slippage until you get up to speed.

Wait...so in 15 minutes you installed and found a used f125 switch?

due to being half crazed with the steroids. This actually stated about a week ago, I posted over on Audizine and Steve Ken then sent me a new/used f125 switch which took me a day or two to get around to installing due to the rain here in RI. I was actually surprised that I was able to remove the old switch and install the new one in under 2 hours as I had read a "tutorial" on the procedure that took 5 or 6 hours. In any case, I have Ross Tech VagCom, just having a hard time finding my logs at the moment. Do you remember where they end up when you "save" them. I can then post my results. Thank you, Paul

Glad you were able to try some troubleshooting. The main connection into the trans from the TCU isn't the greatest and can get dirty, try that. No water or corrosion around the TCU, passenger side under carpet. Just remove plastic edging along door line and you can lift up carpet. We actually found a screwdriver in there when I was swapping out for the MTM TCU.

Good luck with the back, that can knock you out for a while, mine has been bad for about 4 years, finally getting a bit better with time and basic exercises.

After a scan, you've got the option to save the log, it's manual at that point, but it might default to Documents. I always name them regarding the scan, and direct to a folder of car stuff. Did you manually save it after your last scan? If so, try Documents...or got to C: drive > Ross-Tech, dig around in there...

looks like you have a lot of codes that related to low battery voltage. I would charge it, clear the codes and see if it goes into limp mode as soon as you turn the ignition on or when you start the car or only when you put it in D.

hahnmgh63
May 27th, 2014, 00:39
Just what Tozo said. Drive it after charging the battery and clearing the codes. Put the car on a charger prior to checking the codes next time also. If the car has been sitting for a while the battery can drain fairly quickly or you may just have a weak battery. May still have a tranny problem but many of those codes probably won't return.

May 27th, 2014, 03:26
Battery only starts the car guys. It's the voltage from the alternator that's important. Ensure you're charging in excess of 14 volts. 14.4 is spec.

hahnmgh63
May 27th, 2014, 03:50
During engine cranking a weak battery will cause many fault codes that will be stored until cleared. Some faults do and some don't affect systems when they're stored. If you've ever faulted for overboost you will see no CEL but you will have reduced boost until the car has been shut off and restarted. Cars are much more sensitive to voltage/current interuptions and greater/weaker voltage currents nowadays. Newer cars are now much worse than even the RS6 when it comes to this.

mik15
May 27th, 2014, 05:22
as the others said, charge the battery first, then clear the codes, drive it a bit and do a new scan . Also, i see that you still have the F125 error, did you delete it after replacing the switch? if so, it means the new/used switch is faulty.

May 27th, 2014, 13:08
when I went to start it yesterday, wierd, as the car had only been sitting 4 or 5 days and the battery is less than 2 years old. In any case,I'll charge the battery, clear the codes, and scan it all over again. I'
ll post later this morning when I get back home. Thanks, Paul

May 27th, 2014, 13:36
I got a slew of fault codes from a dying battery as well. Replaced with an Autozone exact match + higher CCA rating, cleared codes never came back. That said, once you've charged and restarted, take a look at your voltage gauge (bottom right of instrument cluster) - should be swept towards the 1:30PM position, somewhere between 13.6 and 14.8v while the car is running. If it's too low, you will get codes related to low signal voltage sporadic random and is most likely the alternator diode (3-4hr replacement, but hell on your back) or full alternator replacement ($$$ and same timeframe / pain in the sacroiliac joint)

Good luck!

If it's a bit wet down there, that's not good. I made it through that, but found what could have been a major issue caused by the leaking.

Open up hood, remove plastic guard that covers coolant tank area just below windshield. Passenger side you will have a big drain plug, mine was filled up with debris, allowing overflow and water into passenger footwell. There is also a master fuse, major fuse, something like that, located there. Mine was heavily corroded, amazed my car was just fine with no codes.

So you took this log right after startup, no driving? Is your voltage correct on the dash, ~14? Have you inspected the plug from the TCU into the trans?

I took that log after driving around the block, less than a half a mile, just to see if anything has changed. Still seems to be driving in 3rd gear, No tip functions, all PRNDS still lit up. Voltage on dash seems to be correct.I have not yet inspected the plug on the trans from the TCU, where abouts is it located , passenger side?, towards the bell housing? Bentley seems to be hiding at the moment. WAUXU64B92N039870 is my 2002 S6 Avant. I'll pull the battery and anything else in the way to inspect that clogged drain plug, I was amazed at how filthy the cabin filter was just after a year, got to grab a new one of those as well. Thanks, Paul
