Those of you who have had one fail, did it make noise for a decent amount of time before failure? I'm gauging how dumb I'm willing to be by not replacing it right away.

Depends on how you like handing the keys of the RS6 over to some monkey jockey with a tow truck.

15min job to change the external pump. I would just change it.

I'm gauging how dumb I'm willing to be by not replacing it right away.If you've already confirmed the noise is that of your fuel pump, then just be proactive and change it out. One of the few things you can do without dropping the engine...

With the car running put your hand on the external pump to see if you feel and or hear the noise from that area. If you hear it stronger sitting in the car from the back seat area then it is more likely the internal pump.

And thats why this forum is rockin. get scolded and good advice in the same thread. :)
Pretty sure its external pump. Can hear in car but its louder kneeling under passenger side rear door. Named under warranty coverage so thankful for that. Probably just let my indy do it ASAP.
