Does anyone know if Audi changed what you get when you order the OEM RS6 oil? Last year when I changed my oil I got Castrol Edge 5W40 Turbo Diesel oil (on left) in person from a local dealer. This year (~8k miles later) I ordered from Genuine Audi parts online since they had much better prices on the control arms I also needed, and they sent me Castrol Edge Professional OE 5W30 (on right). In both cases I ordered by part number. Both oils are specified as VW 505 01.

I went ahead and used the 5W30 since the car's not going to be seeing severe duty any time soon (well, ok, and I didn't look at the new bottles in detail until after I drained the sump.) If this is the new OEM I'm thinking I'll find something else for the next change though, and I probably won't wait 8k miles...

I used the OEM edge up to last year. They (Audi) just switched to that new Edge bottle (on the left) a couple years back.

No way would I use this new stuff at 5w-30 no matter what is says about 505.01. Its the wrong oil weight.

BND special blend w/add package is all I use now in both cars.

Looks like Genuine screwed up. I bought some locally not too long ago and it was the 5W-40 TDI oil you have on the left.

No way would I leave that 5W-30 in there. and I would raise hell with Genuine.

Is it G052167M2 or G052167A2? http://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php Maybe when they updated the part# from 'A2' to 'M2' is when they allowed 10W-30? First I have ever seen a 505.01 spec oil other than 5W-40.
Not gospel but some interesting reading: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1625489

P.S. Also, two things, on Pg 232 of the manual it does state "Use oil with a viscosity grade SAE 5W-40 only!", also, the manual states spec ACEA A3, B3, B4, the spec for the 505.01 for the RS6 came out later in a supplement that was dated North America 05.2003

I will double check the invoice I have from 2012 when I got the 5W40, but it was G052167M2 if I recall correctly.

Genuine has offered to refund me on the oil. Really great customer service. I've used them before but they'll definitely be my first choice now.

Interesting link on the oil history. Is there any convenient place to order Euro-spec oil from?

Edit: actually you can see the 5W40 oil above has a sticker on it with the M2 part number.

G052167A2 (discontinued by Audi superseded by M2)= Castrol TXT 505.1 5W-40
G052167M2 = Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40

I get that warm and fuzzy feeling knowing our cars have the best spec oil from day one. To this day it's the good stuff with add packages intact.

No FSI carbon issues.

No injector issues.

No cam issues.

No carbon issues.

I think I will drive an RS6 tomorrow. 70 degrees and sunny.

The only oil issues I've personally seen have been with Castrol products. First time on my VW Scirocco (20-50 Castrol GTX) with complete viscosity breakdown (ZERO oil pressure) in under 2k street miles (hard ones at that). Second, a Porsche 968 with Castrol Syntec with 500 miles. Cams started rusting after sitting for about 2 weeks, completely bone, bone, i mean chalk board bone dry; read: the oil did not adhere and protect the engine like good oil will).

Castrol may be the OE supplier to both Audi and BMW, but I think its for other reason than being the best product.

OEM info Tech:
Engine oil

<tbody>
Oil Type
SAE 5W-40

</tbody>
Engine oil which currently meets Audi Oil Quality Standard VW 505 01

2003-2004 Audi RS6 must use VW 505 01 engine oil with viscosity SAE 5w-40 only. No other engine oil is approved for this model.

End.

Most euro cars will force the owner to choose the viscosity based on climatic conditions (see owners manual)....however the RS6 does not display the usual options.

Owners Manual: (couldn't resist looking) It states to use SJ/CF, or ACEA A3/B3/B4. Interesting it "allows" for SJ/CF spec oils, which are typically higher additive types (relative to the skeleton spec of modern oils). I'm not fully up on the ACEA specs, but some of those I believe are diesel rated. That's a good thing.

I would only use a 5-30 in the dead of winter with consistent temps below freezing. And certainly not a SM/SN rated oil w/o additives to help protect a 10yr old engine. Oddly enough the Castrol 5-30 is CF (diesel 4 cycle) rated, peculiar for a 5-30, but may have a better base stock or additive package-- not that that's nearly enough protection for 450-500hp in our cars.

My metaphor, as often explained to non-tech types is this: As one gets older the requirements of your body changes; the things we use to do are not healthy (never were), but the safety gape between those two lines are now so much closer, and must watch what we put in our selves. Seems to resonate with most people.

The topic of oil grade and quality will never cease....there will be those experience "problems" attributed to their oil, but won't know it, and those that read between the lines to get past the marketing fluff to get to what counts. One can use anything and get away with it for awhile....
