snow chains

I'm considering snow chains for the Beast, first it is law enforced (i.e. when you go to Austria's Alps), second it may be needed, who knows??

Did anybody have any experience with snow chains on 4WD car?. This is my first winter not on RWD or FWD ;)

I'm visiting Alps quite frequently, so I just found out Spikes Spiders to ease my problem. I'm considering Compact set for the from wheels on my winter set (5 spoke).
Spikes Spiders will not work on stock 18" (9 spoke) due to the limited access to the screws, I think.

Any Spikes Spiders users on the board could comment?

Any other opinions?

Hmmm... I think snow chains are not possible with the RS6 - not enough space with 18"/19"

But I don't have a manual, and I think we discussed this earlier. Can anyone else confirm?

To my understanding you are not supposed to use anything that changes the diameter of the wheel from front to rear. I believe It can cause damage to the AWD system.

As far as I followed the posts so far, I could use chains on the front wheels when I use narrower tires (225/45R18).
That's exactly what I expected, but I see no Spikes Spiders users :cry:

Marcin, if you will use the spikes use it on ALL 4 WHEELS, not just front.

You will not, unless you run into a clear ice condition, really need chains at all as lomg as you have decent winter tires.

In last 14 years with quattro I do not remember single case I had to have chains and last 8 years I drove winters in Krkonose and Tatra mountains and you surely know how well the roads are cleaned in this part of world.
