I think it's time to upgrade stock drc.
Was set on koni yellows/h&r but wouldn't mind slightly used coilovers kit.

I have one RS with H&R's, one RS with coilovers and one A6 with H&R's. I prefer the ride of the H&R's on my RS to the coilovers, but I hate the H&R's on my A6.

Do you have the H&R 'race' springs or 'sport' springs from the A6 4.2s on the RS6 ?

Interesting... all i need is to lower a car a bit and have a somewhat comfy ride.

Has anyone heard of ST coilovers? There is a group buy going on Audizine right now, $750 shipped. Technically they don't make kits for rs6 but its "ok" to use the one from a6, i would assume its the same idea as people use koni/h&r from a6 v8.

part of the email:
"they only make for the A6Q but according to their bills of materials they use the same:
Front and rear springs
Rear Shocks

But the Front shocks are the same housings just different compression valves - we are assuming that it is most likely a bit higher power than the standard A6Q"

Any opinions?

The A6 are H&R sports I'm pretty sure (it was a Craigslist deal). I'm not sure about Thing 1 RS but I absolutely love the ride on it. The coilovers on Thing 2 RS are just a little to stiff for the roads around here and my taste.

Race springs would make your car VERY low, i'm sure they are sport. Are they sitting on DRC or aftermarket shocks?
The only thing i don't like about h&r is that rear will be higher than front, i was thinking about eibach instead.

I would love to go with race springs, but after having them on my previous car, i'm afraid i would be changing body parts every year with our road conditions here in IL.

You couldn't pry my KWV3's from me if you tried. So much better than the DRC. As for the ST Coilovers. The ST's are made by KW and are comparable to the KWV1's. If they have the KW lifetime warranty that would be a plus.

As far as i know they don't offer lifetime warranty and are not covered in anti corrosion paint.

The more i read about ST, the more i hear about their stiffness once you go <24".

The A6 4.2 with H&R sports on 19's. Looks great, ride sucks.

i bought the ST kit and will be installed next week, i've just left my car to my mech for an engine pull and suspension will also be changed, TechGuru has already an ST kit installed, maybe he chips in with some feedback!

Given the price of H&R coilovers at 1200 for the set. I would not bother with used. If 1200 is too much then try the ST group buy.

KW V3 ride like a dream but you pay for it.

^^ Agreed, these cars are not for the Ecomony minded. If you need to buy a set of used coilovers, then sell the car Imediately because there is no cheap way out with this car. It is better to do it right the first time and be done away with it. I run H&R Coilovers because they are relatively cheap in comparison to KW's and Provide what I consider to be a very good ride and handling characteristics. You'll find most Europeans use H&R coilover setups and that's good enough for me. If you want adjustability then go with the KW's but you will pay for them. Just my 1 cent..........................

Thanjs guys
I'm not trying to buy cheap coilover set, but at the same time I don't think kw v3s is what I need.
I wanted to see if someone was parting out their car and had a good set for sale.

H&R is something I'm highly considering.
Elevens, could you please post pics of your car?

the ST coilovers kit is now on the car, as first impression i really like it! The ride is comfortable, just as with the DRC but still does very well when cornering! Compared to KW V3 that my friend has on its RS6, these might seem soft, but depends on what you want! With the KW V3 i find the ride too hard and stiff, i feel every little bump on the road and it shakes pretty well when you hit a bigger bump or pothole, TBH i wouldn't want that on my daily ride! if you don't track the car i don't really see the point on paying the extra money for features you will probably never use, setting the compression and rebound rate on the KW V3 or any other similar kit is not easy and once you find a good compromise i can bet you won't touch it again, this was the main reason i didn't go for it!

you can read more about H&R on rs246.com, the UK site for RS's, i did and it seems that some complained that the ride is very stiff, i was also considering the H&R but after reading a bit didn't want it anymore! There is also FK which has a specific coilovers for RS6 for a similar price of the ST.

what really made me buy the ST was the backup they have from KW, being manufactured in Germany by KW, otherwise i wouldn't have probably went for it!

Here's a couple of photo's audiprotn. Handling is nothing short of Superb with a very acceptable Ride. Remember this goes along with the Hotchkiss sway bars and Michelin PSS tires, which I have found to be an unbeatable combination.

Did you need any additional rear strut mounts?

By looking at picture I took at the time of installation, that appears to be the correct front spring number. The entire Coilover kit number appears to be F46-1001-1/1 or this may be just the Shock number that goes with the kit, I don't know. You reuse the Original rear strut mounts. You could buy a new set but mine were OK........

Alright, coilovers have been installed.
My drc was working fine prior to that.
With coilovers in, almost every bump there is a feeling of front suspension being separated from the rear.
Alignment is off, but not as bad as it was after control arms/ tie rod installation.
Feels like its happening more on the right side, car is pulling to the right as well.
Any suggestions?

What coilover plg was installed.

What do you mean by front apart from rear.

How were shocks setup

Ride height currently

???

I second what Dhall1 said. What did you finally install and who installed them? The H&R's you were looking at were for a regular C5 A6 which is weighted differently than the RS6 so the springs at the least would be off a bit and if H&R did a real custom job the valving could be a bit different.

audiprotn
March 24th, 2013, 04:24
What exactly is the coilover plug?
I've got H&R, they are only height adjustable.
I would say 25 1/4 front and 25 1/2 rear.
After driving for an hour, seems like it happens only in the rear, passenger side. Feels like the wheel is actually moving around. Driving on flat surface is just fine, no shaking/vibration whatsoever.
Could that be caused by not tightening up enough lower subframe?

audiprotn
March 24th, 2013, 04:27
hahnmgh63,
H&R for a6. The same part number that everyone else running on their rs6s.
My friend ( another rs6 owner) basically did the installation himself.

Elevens
March 24th, 2013, 04:46
Set the Ride height to your liking then get it Aligned Imediately. Only after that point can you begin to critique the system. Also I hope all suspension components were tightened under load as this will adversely affect the balance of the car and cause premature bushing wear if not done..................

Sorry typo. Plg=pkg

Is that ride height from ground to fender arch? That's low

Measure from wheel center to fender arch.

If you go too low it may throw off some steering angles.

Try 13 5/8 front and 13 1/2 rear for starters and check those control arms. Full tank

Alignment is done. The rear wheels issue was definitely due to us dropping the subframe and messing up the alignment.

Thanks everyone.

Car is still pulling a bit to the right, but i'm blaming it on tires.

You removed rear subframe to change the rear struts?

First two pics look good on the height. Last one looks lower. Which suspension height did you end up with? Center hub to fender lip and now how are the H&R coilovers?

Looking good.

audiprotn
March 25th, 2013, 19:11
Yeah, we had to loosen it a bit.

All pictures were taken after final adjustments. I haven't measured it yet, will do tonight.

Like I said earlier, my drc was in a good shape prior to removing it.
I definitely like the height, but it doesn't feel "well balanced" like it used to be with drc.
Im sure hotchkins will solve this issue.
I didn't expect it to be super comfortable, so at the end I'm happy with the results.

just go custom route, it's cheaper and you can always modify it right there

That was a simplified explanation. I'm going back to a ship, my old ship to be precise, in Florida. We will be in and out and then on a 7 month deployment I expect will get back early next summer. A year from then, give or take a few months, we(the ship and crew) will be moving to Rota, Spain. I should have three years left onboard at that point. I plan on fully refitting the car over there. Euro interior, 6-speed with tilton clutch, loba cams and turbos, inconel manifolds, milltek exhaust, rs4 19's. phaeton brake mod. MAYBE c6 ceramic brakes if a reasonably priced set comes along. Then the car will come back with me when I transfer back to the states :-)
