This is what a certain shop indicated that I should buy to replace my turbo lines; and he recommended replacing the coolant lines as well. Is this about right?:vhmmm::vgrumpy:

The good news is that my tranny might still have some life---it was lacking about a quart of oil, hence, the slippage. It frankly works a better now.:thumb: :dance:

I assume they've tried to simply tighten the banjo bolts? However it's pretty hard to access them with the motor in the car. I don't know why the lines themselves would be bad :/

Do the same thing to the motor that you did to the trans. Keep adding oil. Do the turbo lines when you have to pull the motor for something else, like the cabin air filter.

Sorry, early morning sense of humor. Since everything else requires a motor pull, I just assumed the cabin air filter would too! :lovl:

In response to nprcprt and the original thread, how much are the turbo lines leaking? Do they leave drops on the garage floor? How much oil do you use between oil change intervals? If you're not losing that much oil between changes, I wouldn't touch the turbo lines until you have to pull the motor for something else that makes the car undriveable like a trans/TC/oil cooler pipe/turbo.

Looks to me like over $1100 in parts and another $1500-2000 for labor I assume.

Haha. I thought so.

ntrcpr, are you getting smoke from the burning oil?

this just isn't a common issue I'm aware of. Gives me some reason for skepticism.

just drops. I'm just concerned how this trickle if unchecked early can lead to boom!!!:nono:. I am cognizant of the cost factor. and no, I don't smell/see burning oil.

How much oil is your RS using? per 1000 miles, approximately.

lswing
November 18th, 2012, 18:36
Your mechanic should be pinpointing the leak. Did they really give you that whole list of parts as needed for repair? It could be less I would think. Yep, how much oil and where's it going?

My RS6 developed a significant oil leak at the RH turbo about a year ago. After taking the engine out, I found it was caused by the banjo bolt loosening on the turbo oil supply line. From everything I could tell, the engine has to be pulled to gain access to that banjo bolt.

If you're going to wait to correct the problem, don't let it get too bad since the banjo bolt could loosen more and increase the volume of the leak. You don't want to let it get so bad the oil pressure to the turbo drops and oil-starves the turbo bearings. Also, I'd question the need to replace the lines. They are braided stainless steel and pretty tough.

How much was coming out? per 1000 miles? approximately.

It was a pretty significant leak that developed quickly and was getting worse pretty rapidly. It would leak a puddle on the floor that was a few inches in diameter every time I drove it. It was bad enough that I wanted to fix it quickly - something was clearly not right and getting worse.

I can't really estimate has much it was leaking per 1000 miles.

Here's a picture of the back side of the engine that shows the braided stainless steel oil and coolant lines that feed the turbos.
