Folks,

Since it seems I am just a couple days away from being back in the fold, I have dusted off my rusty Japanese (yup 6 years there), and have been speaking with the folks that make the completely boss Carbon Lip spoiler for our cars.

As Steve and other can attest to, the fit of this unit is second to none. It slips over the bottom valence portion of the front bumper, aligns with the fog light openings and uses the inner front buper liner attachement points.

It is a work of art. I also have figured out a way to make it a bit more durable in the front section, through a couple trial and error experiences.

Anyway, here is the fabulous news, I can get them shipped to your door for $1200 each. That is roughly half the cost that was quoted Ben last year.

I must have 5 prepaid orders, and lead time is about 6 weeks.

I wont cover anyone backing out, but I will cover you if the manufactuer fails to deliver.

Here are a couple photos of the spoiler, it really is something very special.

Erik, please let me know if I am out of line on this post?

warm regards, and almost back.....

I don't use any adhesive when attaching. Put a 3m layer on yur lower bumper and it slides right on and off. Folks this is a screaming deal that may never happen again. They are doing this for me, I have already bought three of them, and they know I need another. I will likely buy two.. That means we really need 3 more folks to step up to the plate. Will be more to ship to austrailia. These will arrive fob to la, then be shipped from there to the buyers.

As gas a ride height, it lowers the front about 1.5 inches.

dont stress about driving it around mate, my car is low..it has been on there for 4 years....sure it has some marks underneath it (you have to be careful on driveways etc) but day to day..i have been airborn at 115 mph landed .kinda ok (no damage to splitter, no cracks, nothing). regulary over 150 mph copped one small chip in the front bottom of it.in the past 4 years..to be honest plastic will look real pox if you dont colour match it to your car, as imo its too tall (at the sides) to be just plastic...i am painting mine next week and leaving just a hint of carbon, as i have had it for a long time and are looking for a new look...so if you like carbon and the look the splitter for the $ you'd be mad to not get one, if your just worried about normal driving...i assume you currently dont run into things?? you'll be fine mate...

actually taking some stone chips out the body work now..see pic12585

Some folks have asked about installation, durability, payment terms etc...and I cleaned out some space in my pm box.

Here are some answers

1) installation is super easy. Can be done with one person. I recommend that you put film over the paint on the lower bumper. This will protect the paint finish from the spoiler itself. The spoiler attaches to the lower bumper lip and then wraps around the front. The fit and finish of the product are excellent. It is nothing but autoclaved carbon cloth and resin. They do a nice job with the weave, and there have not been any voids from what I have seen.

2) The lowest front section is a little exposed to curbs and the like, and will not clear a parking curb... To bolster this from being damaged or split, I used some two part foam to fill the back side. Then I filmed the entire spoile to protect against scratches and rub marks.

3) as far as payment, my preference would be to have folks send checks, I can take paypal as well, but don't want to eat the fee.

4) there is no upwards limit, we can get more than 5, but they will only make as many as I order.

5) my plan is to hold this open until Monday, then communicate on Momday night, Tuesday morning Japan time. So let's say, 5 pm eastern monday for commit.

Thanks everyone, I am really excited about these.

I have 4 confirmed...I need at least one more to make this group buy go...if you are on the fence, just know that you will never see this price again. When Ben and Steven enquired last year the price was 2400.00.

My goal is to get these ordered tomorrow night, Tuesday morning Japan time with monies collected before week end.

Folks,

We have a bit of a dilemma. There are three more folks that want to get one of these. I have reached out to Japan and they are willing to make them for the same price...however, it will slow down the overall order by another two weeks. The first 7 will be ready to ship by mid next week to LA, and then figure a week to you, so even before estimated time of six weeks.

If you have one ordered and you simply can not go another two weeks without one, then pm me and let me know how you feel. I would like to let these other three inboard, if only to make it easier for us to buy more, or buy replacements from Japan in the future.

I will give this until Friday morning, then either submit the additional orders, or not....

Warm regards,

Stephen

Just a quick update as I know everyone is on pins and needles. They have been shipped from Japan, they went by boat versus air as there were so many. They have not arrived to me yet.... Once they do, I will post and then send them out one by one. I am very sorry for the length of time this has taken... I am just as anxious as all of you.

Folks,

I spoke with the owner of the shop that made these for us. I asked him to get a timeline fro mthe shipping company. Unfortunately, they are going to take a little longer to arrive as they went by boat. The shipping company indicated they will land in port in mid sept, and should be to me by truck 5 days after as they will have to clear customs in port.

In retrospect, we maybe should have shipped these at a higher cost, by air to each owner. As this is my first endeavor like this, I truly apologize. I will eat the customs duty on my nickel...

As soon as they arrive in port, I will get an email from the owner in Japan. I will update the board as soon as this occurs.

Thanks again for your patience. Please know that I am just as excited as all of you, and that I trust these guys as I have bought from them twice before.

Folks,

I am really sorry I have not given you an update in the last two weeks. I have been in London for business all this week, and my wife had our new baby boy last week.

The lips are on the docks now waiting to clear customs. They actually came off the boat on the 28th of September, and I have been corresponding with the folks at port every couple days. I had to pay 598 to have the lips offloaded from the shipping company and will have to pay a fixed percentage to the customs broker once they have cleared customs. The broker said it could take from 1-2 weeks to clear customs.

I will pick up the spoilers by truck and mail them out the same day.

I know this has been a really painful process. I can only say that I am doing everything I can to get them too you.

If anyone would feel better chatting by phone to get an update, send me a pm and I will send you. My mobile phone number so we can chat.

Do what you must. As you know, the parking curb will win every time, especially since this piece is somewhat rigid.

FWIW, my wife does not drive my car. She is not anal about curbs (she says she is, but I assure you she is not).
But then, staining my clothes doesn't bother me in the least, so maybe I'm the one with the problem!

And, if you ever need to ship your spoiler anywhere, like to the next concours event, cause you dont want to drive your car anywhere while exposing a $2600 carbon lip, you will have JUST the container.

Everyone will get their tracking details by PM or email. These will be insured for 2K each.

Stephen -

I shipped an old fiberglass Mk 1 Scirocco airdam a few months back. I used some 2x2 stiffeners, more 2x2 up for the spoiler sides, braced that with some diagonal 2x2 - all stapled with 1" staples from my Bostitch staple gun. Wrapped that in plastic wrap heavily, then double wrapped that in heavy cardboard.

The guy I sent it too was _so_ impressed.

This makes what I did look like childsplay.

Methinks I will trim the ears off of it, add some hinges to the lid, and use it for.....ummmmmm.....something.

It is way too pretty to toss!

Nice!

And thanks!

Haha I never thought I'd be this excited about a wooden box shaped so awkwardly. Thank you Stephen!

Tomorrow evening would be fine. I'll be putting the winter wheels on the A6 and probably drive that down. I would be coming down PA-99 and across 76, how about near Breezewood, or I could come a little further if need be.

Trying to make it work...maybe tomorrow evening? Where could we connect?

Stephen, you have gone way beyond the call of duty here. Please let us know the additional costs, and a write up of "the lesson" would make for some good reading as well! But your willingness to do all of this for forum members you don't personally know speaks not only to your character, but to the community of this forum. My thanks!
My car was getting a new transmission this past week at 126K miles, and with the lip, will be ready for many more miles of driving pleasure...

Stephen I finally got to open the case after Halloween and a small flooding incident. the spoiler is amazing. Now that I see it I am pretty sure it wont get painted but will have to wait and see it on the car. I have attached the pics of the unboxing porn. The packaging was great and I can only imagine how much time and trouble you went through to do this for us. Thanks again and thanks to those that let the last few of us in before the buy. I will be sending $200 more to help cover your costs. Thanks Stuart:applause:

Opened the box late today, lip in perfect condition, although my goldendoodle was more intrigued by a squirrel running by. Thanks, Stephen, for the amazing work you did for all of us on this. Hoping to attach this ASAP when my car returns with its rebuilt transmission in a day or two.

Once I run the car through the wash, I will post more pictures.

Looks great! Thanks Stephen!

For those who have not put their lip on yet… this is a very tight (perfect) fit. I have a clear bra on my front body and caused some scratches in the bra… so watch your lower body. I will probably clear bra the lip as well. Anyhow, I had some fear that I was going to crack the lip putting it on and sure enough, it did crack on one of the corners of the lip… approximately 2mm crack … not much flex in the cold weather. I will try to take a picture of that as well.

Stephen, PM your Paypal acct.

Thanks again!

It looks amazing on your Ebony car.....WOW

For the crack, put some epoxy on the crack ASAP and it should arrest it. As for the rest of you, start from the center. Use 2 folks and push gently as you go around to the sides. This creates the needed slack to fit around the corners.

PM on its way.

Gents,

I finally got my splitter over the boarder and would love to see a DYI on this before hacking away at it.

Does anyone feel comfortable enough documenting the right way to install this carbon masterpiece? Do I need to use Double-sided tape? Fill it with foam? Clear-bra the bumper?

Any guidance would be strongly appreciated!

Thanks (extra thanks to Stephen!)

That looks perfect!

Did you use anything to stick the splitter to the front bumper? Or just the two screws?

Agree, very snug. I drove around for a day without the two screws. It is that snug. My original plan was to take it back off for the winter, so I didn't want to mess with the screws. I was going to take some pictures and put it away. When I tried to take it back off, I began pulling but then was overcome with fear that it was going to crack more and just decided to leave it on for the winter… i.e., snowplow. I want to get a clear bra on it. If I plow a little snow… so be it.

Of note, the edges of the carbon fiber lip are sharp. Luckily I have a clear bra on my front bumper. I fear this lip would eat up the paint without one. I don't know a way to protect your bumper as you put it on. You do not need double sided tape. It would be nice to get something soft in between the bumper and the lip, but I don't believe you have enough room.

Stephen says this is a two man job. I did it without help which might be why I had a challenge.

Anyway, I look forward to everyone's pictures! Whether you put it on now or in the spring… be sure to post a few!

Below is a picture of where mine cracked as I was pulling to get it on. It is unnoticeable from 5 feet, but here is a close-up. I bought some epoxy to arrest the crack.

Thanks for the details 1uglymug & Stephencl - very helpful! I will clear the bumper before the install to protect the paint.

Final dumb question: the two screws are the existing hex bolts in the bumper now correct?

Correct. Lower screws in the wheel wells. 1uglymug's image above shows it perfectly.
Remove both screws, mount it (as Stephen says from the center out to get slack), pop one side on, then the other.

I found it helpful to use a finishing nail as a sounding device to center the hole perfectly before starting the screw. I also did it by myself using rags to support the ends and keep them from getting scratched by the ground, but a second set of hands would have been a help.

Personally, I used double-sided tape on the inside of the lip at several key points so that it doesn't rub directly against the paint. As many have said, it's pretty tight already so it's by no means necessary.

One more thing: For the sharp edges, just use really fine sandpaper (600# or finer-- I went to 2000#) to very slightly soften/round the sharp edges where it touches the body. I painted mine, so it wasn't a big deal anyway.
