View Full Version : Where do I buy Phaeton backing plates and ducts?

4everRS

Anyone know? I want to do the Phaeton duct mod and am having a tough time sourcing parts. Tried Genuine. They're not listed on the site. I sent Bill a message to ask if he can source them. Part numbers below.

1) 2x Phaeton backing plates (3do 615 311c & 3d0 615 312c)
2) 2x Phaeton air ducts (3d0 615 447d & 3d0 615 448d)
3) 4x brake bolts (100 650 02)
4) 8x securing bolts (908 429 03)

I bought mine from Unit 20 and they came with the backing plates already modified. You can Papal in British Pounds but in my case don't be in a hurry as they can be a little slow to shipped but the price was reasonable. www.impex.com (http://www.impex.com) does show some of the parts on their website as Special Order which also means waiting for shipping as I doubt anyone stateside stocks the parts as the U.S. Phaetons didn't have the bigger brakes & ducts.

A couple of days ago, I ordered a roll of carbon fiber intending to make some ducts for my car, and possibly to sell. Due to my work/travel schedule, it will probably be two months or so until I have something to test.

I had planned to make make something useable for me first, and then offer a couple here for free to get some real world testing and feedback before making more for sale. If you're willing to wait 2-3 months, you can have my first test set.

Got quotes today from Unit 20 and from Bill at genuine.

Unit 20 is 160 pounds, which equals about 260 USD

Genuine is 196 USD.

Both are shipped quotes to MN.

What to do?

IIRC, Grizz has them already cut for you and drilled and painted. Not 100% if his are plug and play (meaning any grinding needed)

The genuine one's are build-it-yourself and cut-it-yourself.
The day I did mine, we also did Wade's (born2be) and the original template was off of my car but when the template transferred, there was adjustments on both sides for both cars.
This is due to the bottom portion of the upright slight differences and the hole alignment.
I also has a slight clearance issue on the left side headlight level arm - nothing I could do but not turn right to full steering lock...

This is a great mod.. value. Increasing safety and probably longevity. The OEM rotors are flawed, if you look at them from the inside. There is a curling lip on the "hat" which prevents air from directly entering the vanes on the rings.. and this will greatly offset that!

Come on lets get 10!

If the above confirm, that means we only need 3 more.

This kit is already modified to fit our cars. Shipped. Hardware. And their from Grizz. My sig will will say "Unit 20 brake ducts"! :)

Come on others. Get the deal.

It's getting pretty late in the UK so Grizz probably won't let us know how to pay til tomorrow or Monday.

Less than an hour labor for both sides. Grizz has these already to bolt on. The only thing you run into us if the existing bolts holding the plates are seized.

Ok people, we are at 9. One more. Kismetcaptian? Come on. Don't be a loser. (no peer pressure) :)

+2 Grizz and Unit 20 are good to work with. I just ordered my Phaeton duct kit from Grizz end of March and you guys are definitely getting a good price. Mine took exactly a week for shipping from the day Grizz said they went out to show up on my door in UTAH by Royal mail. Also he has all the hard parts done for you. If you can take your wheel and caliper off you can install this in no time. I made sure to have these on before I took my girl out to stretch her legs at Miller Motorsports Park here in UT and although I never went out with a stock set up to compare I can tell you that thru 8- 20 min sessions over the weekend with this mod , EBC Yellows, and RBF 600 I never had any issues with brake fade.

hunter
May 6th, 2012, 17:02
One thing you guys might want to ask Grizz is what wheel and tire sizes will work with this. I'm pretty sure 19s are no issue but wider than the OEM spec of 8.5 I would ask obout fittment. Since I'm tracking my girl I stay at 18-8.5

I really doubt it would be an issue. Reference the pic in post #42. The plate and duct moves with the steering. If anything, a small amount of the duct would require a small trim. I really don't think it would be an issue.

Yep. Easy DIY. If you can take off a wheel you can do this. The caliper come off with 2 Allen bolts. Then the backing plate comes off using a torx socket bit. I think there are 4 of them.

That's funny. But you know the way this car makes me feel when i drive her i just about could be moved to write a love sonnet about her. But if i did i wouldn't stick it on her brake ducts, i'd post it on the web :-)

"This lesson is not limited to cultural products either. Economists like Brian Arthur and Paul David have long argued that similar mechanisms affect the competition between technologies (like operating systems or fax machines) that display what are called “network effects,” meaning that the attractiveness of a technology increases with the number of people using it. Sorry, but I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve when it comes to ordering/waiting on Audi upgrade parts. As a side note, I managed to fight off the temptation to convert my S6 to a six speed by buying a real five speed, an old (1978) Porsche 911 SC (air cooled!). As I've read in the past that a few of you are Porsche owners, who are the recommended parts dealers for new and/or used 911 parts, I see that Tweeks is no longer in business ? The Group buy is now closed.
The kit's will be sent out monday in order that they were placed .
I'm now sick of cutting up the back plates .
They will be sent royal mail to keep costs down.
I'll post in batches of 5 and will post on this forum when they have been sent.

We've had a big problem getting them all from audi as they must only sell 1 set a month .. :)

Justin,

Grizz/Unit20 is in England, is a "small business" not warehouse, and uses their parcel post system, which seems to take a bit longer than we're used to with Internet--> FedEx/UPS. Grizz is a solid guy. Over the years, I've ordered Phaeton plates, Wagner IC's and Euro Headlights from him, all pre-paid by me and everything has arrived as promised. It's like a kid waiting for Christmas toys to arrive... never soon enough, right!

As reading this thread, it seems due to the numbers involved, he's doing these in batches. You understand that the stock Phaeton plate has to be hand cut with a template to adapt to our cars, so it's a bit time intensive. BTW, when we started doing this back in '07, we had to make our own templates and cuts - so Grizz is saving you quite a bit of hassle and additional $ - you guys have it soooo easy :)

(not sure how this reads, no attitude intended, just sharing feedback)

FWIW, Jim

My wife's family lives in a suburb of London... When we receive packages from England via regular mail, it can take anywhere from 1.5 to 5 weeks for delivery...

Can't imagine there is much margin for Grizz after parts, fabrication, packaging and postage...

Thanks again, Grizz!

This group buy has turned into a real mess.

For some reason I had a funny feeling and although I committed to buy early on, I never sent any money.

How many have got their kits and how many have not? And Grizz, can you give an update on your end (transparency is probably the best policy at this point).

What percentage of the cost of the kits is the backing plates? If they are all machined like wpod's, I'm sure some buyers will want to find replacements they can machine themselves.

If any get two packages (the original and replacement) I would be interested in buying the extra one from grizz and have it direct shipped to me... Anyone????

I finally had some time this weekend and got around to installing the ducts along with new rotors, HPS pads, ECS lines, super blue fluid, and buffed and waxed the front calipers.

Pretty disappointed in the fitment of the backing plates. A lot of meat was unnecessarily cut off to clearance the uprights, which are now no where near the backing plates! At least they can serve as an inspection window for pad/rotor wear! Looking back on it, I wish I just requested the plates left stock and I would have taken the time necessary to make the cutouts pristine and look respectable.

While Grizz probably lost out on the all the rework that was required due to loss packages, I can't help but wonder why he rushed through these replacement sets? Also, I am surprised my replacement set even made it to me, and see how the first set was lost. The packaging looked like it had been to hell and back - rips and tears all over. These parts, due to their sharps, should have been placed in a tyvek bag, not a non-reinforced paper product.

I wonder if the packaging was the issue; mine was ripped and nearly falling out, but miraculously everything was still in there. I got the same email that he refunded - but nothing has shown up on my Paypal account either.

I have been involved in so many group buys for Audi stuff over the years.......and this is the only time I have ever been burned.

This is why Ebay now forces tracking on all auctions. Otherwise there is no accountability. "I sent it...I promise", or, "I never received it.....I promise", and the whole thing turns into a game of he said she said.

I am still out $212.

Fuh.

I ended up getting the refund finally. He had mispelled my email address when he sent the refund. We figured it out together. I would email him and verify your paypal email address with him again. He is always quick to reply and help so I dont think your missing refund is an intentional thing on his end.

I got the same email that he refunded - but nothing has shown up on my Paypal account either.

Edit for being square. Thanks Martin.

I'm in the same boat. One of the first to send money, and I received nothing. Out the money with nothing to show for it. I was planning on buying downpipes from these guys too. What a mistake that would have been. My first group by on the site, and now likely my last one. Getting scammed sucks.

Please email me martin@unit20.org and I'll send a refund .

as I've said this has been a disaster .

I and many others have bought from Unit20 with no issues at all. As he (Martin) has said this Group buy has turned out to be a complete disaster and a learning experience, as far as Overseas Group buys are concerned. He'll probably never do it again, as I am sure he has lost money on this whole ordeal. If you have not received your Refund, then Contact him I am sure he will work it out with you. Calling him a Scammer is completely out of place and uncalled for, since most that are due refunds have already received them.

Plus 1 to what Eleven's said....as the organizer of a very expensive carbon spoiler group buy, I can tell you it is NOT a money making proposition. I have personally dealt with Grizz on MANY topics over the last 8 years, and they have all been great. Let's not throw the baby out with the bath water here. I am sure he will make it right.

Thanks guys ,
the facts are , I own a small garage and well a few parts to customers all over the world .
At present I helping a customer in Australia who's car was very badly damaged so required a full car to be stripped and shipped .

i was Totally over whelmed by the numbers in this GB .
I tried to keep the costs down and didn't use a tracked shipping service .

I've spent years building up my company and as a enthusiast put my heart and sole into everything .
its not about making money , it was about trying to help other enthusiasts out .

I failed , I'm genuinely gutted .

sorry .

I received a refund within an hour of asking for it.

I believe Martin is genuinely upset about this. I feel bad the group buy was a flop and equally bad for Martin.

FlyFisher, I organized this, so I will take credit for 'recommending' unit20. However you won't be getting a beer from me, so don't hold your breath. Ask for your money back. Move on.
