i've noticed a rattle at about 1250-1400 rpm which last very briefly, i can only hear it when the engine is hot, when cold no noise....if a rev it easily i can hear a rattle occurring somewhere between 1200rpm-1400rpm and then goes away, keep increasing the revs no noise. Going back to idle revs and repeating the procedure i can hear it again, but if i don't let it back to idle revs and keep it at 1000rpm and then rev it back to 1200rpm-1400rpm the rattle doesn't occur anymore....is this normal or is it something wrong with the cams ? i think the noise might come from the chain tensioner....!? i didn't hear it before or maybe i wasn't paying so much attention, if you're not listening carefully you can't hear it, if the stereo is on or the window isn't rolled down no way you can hear it!

i have heard the same noise at the exact same rpm interval on another RS6 and some of the guys on rs246.com have reported this as well...

has anyone else experienced this?

just like mine? between 1200-1400rpm for a very brief moment and then goes away?

It only seems to happen while driving forward, there is a rattle or clunk upon engine rev...
Very reproduceable

i didn't try backwards, then again i don't think i would get to 1200rpm-1400rpm in R, sounds more like a rattle, i can reproduce it even if i don't drive it, just idling it at that rpm, but usually if the engine is warmed up, when it's cold it doesn't do it...

hmmm.....mine was more of a clunk, and existed when I was starting or coming to a stop..like yours low rpm. it was unnerving...Mine turned out to be nothing with engine or trans....loose sterring rack bolt, an engine cradle stretch bolts, which were loose.

i will try to make a video and post it, but this has nothing to do with the rack, it doesn't matter whether the car is moving or is stopped, it's only rpm related and only within the specified range 1200-1400rpm and when it's hot! BTW, do you still have the GB? i haven't got back to you because i am not yet decided what to do, to change just the TC or the entire box...

Cam tensioner possibly

yup still have gear box, sell it cheaper and drop it off at 517 or level10 for ya, that way u can beef it to handle 700hp, ;)

I've driven a few RS6s and have heard this on all of them. For me, its easily repeatable without the car moving from idle. It definitely sounds like valvetrain noise. I'm guessing its an artifact of the tensioners?

Glad to know I haven't been hearing voices, er, I mean noises. I have the same sound at the mentioned RPM. Have wondered what is was since I've had the car.

it would be good to know what exactly is...anyway the noise is the same since the first time i've heard it, briefly occurs between mentioned rpm, maybe for half a second or less...

Mine does it I think.. although right at throttle tip in. Pretty sure its the cam tensioners. adjusting, as I logged it with the sounds.

I tried to get this to happen, but can't.

Please someone satisfy my need for hypochondria and tell me how to do it.

When I first got my RS6 18 months ago I heard the same noise and immediately was worried it was the start of a problem, as time went on and it didn't get any worse I became sure it was OK what ever exactly the noise was; I thought I was maybe the only person in the world anal enough to hear it, but obviously not!....

4everRS, to do it (at least it's how I hear it on mine), do as follows. With the car in park or neutral very slowly increase the engine revs, as you see the rev counter pass between 1200-1400 rpm listen carefully and you will hear a brief/slight rattle noise; at the same time you may also see the rev counter needle briefly jump.

The variable cam chain adjuster makes that noise. Heavier weight oil will make it quieter.

i am now using 5w40, 505.01 Liqui Moly, i've used before(1 time only)Mobil 1 0w40 and the noise was more noticeable...do you think changing the cam tensioners will make it disappear?
