Yup, I haven't been to the US for a long while, but now it's finally time!

I'm going to be in NY City April 25 - May 3 for a holiday.

I haven't booked a hotel yet, so if you have recommendations for 4**** hotels or similar I'd be happy to take a look.

Must visit Restaurants?

Other must-sees and must-do things?

trendy cool- The Standard, Hotel in meat packing district....sits on top of th high line park, very cool. And they have a huge bier gaarten. Also Budhakann is a very good and trendy Asian fusion rest. Wolfgangs Steak, BLT Steak, or fish both very good.

First off, welcome (almost) to the USA. Second, save your money, don't rent a car. Parking is hell, and expensive if you can find it. You'll pay $25-40 a night to park at most hotels, and the traffic is just, well, it sucks. I did get lucky one time and drove the entire length of 5th Ave from North to South and only had to stop 4 times. Should have bought a lottery ticket that day. I can't suggest any hotels in the city, only that you choose one close to a subway stop. If you know where you want to go, ride the subway to get there, and if it isn't too far, walk back.

Spring time in NYC is perfect. Not too warm, not too cold, visit Central Park to join in some soccer, volleyball or whatever is happening. All around there are places to visit as well: on the SE corner is the Apple Store, West side of the park are the museums, and the John Lennon memorial if you're so inclined. Saturday afternoon in the park you can enjoy a free jazz band, the guys live all over the country and fly in to play every weekend.

There are many things to see all around Manhattan. Start with Chinatown early in the morning, any day but Thursday (trash day in lower Manhattan, smells like hell.) Walk along Canal Street and barter with the vendors, find yourself a good fake watch and get the best price you can. I bought a really nice Tag Heuer Carrera for $60, it lasted two years before the second hand fell off, but it was worth it just for the fun. Eat lunch in Little Italy, I usually go to Cafe Napoli or Brick Oven Pizza on Mulberry Street. You can also Visit SoHo late afternoon or early evening, a lot of actors/musicians live there, you might see some celebs in the area. Car watching is also good there, Ferraris, Astons and Lambos parked along the sidewalk are normal. Make a trip or two to Times Square in the evening to see all the lights and find something for dinner. There are plenty of good restaurants around there. DO NOT shop in or around the Square, the prices are inflated but cheaper than most Europeans pay for the same items, which will make you think you are getting a deal. Go a few blocks in any direction and you'll get the same thing for much less. You can also check out the theaters on Broadway in the evenings, sometimes the show stars will come outside and sign autographs, if you're into that.

I haven't been in the city for a couple years now, but I would definitely visit the area around Trade Center Plaza. The work they have done there looks incredible on TV.

Go up the Empire State Building on a sunny day during the week. It will be less crowded than on the weekend. The view really is worth the $15 or so it costs to go up there. Don't pay the extra to go to the upper observation level, it is higher but you can't go outside and enjoy the breeze.

You'll be there for hockey playoffs, try to get tickets to a Rangers game at Madison Square Garden. They'll be expensive, the arena is old and dark, but the atmosphere will be crazy and would be a great time for sure.

That's all I've got for now, I'm sure I'll think of more before your arrival.

Is that the one with all of the exhibitionist guests that the park-goers love? :)

Agree with Stephen, Standard in the Meatpacking is the place to be, if not try Gansevoort down the street also in meatpacking. Standard has the bier gaarten as mentioned as well as the boom boom room on the roof with an amazing view of hudson & good crowd. Gansevoort has http://www.provocateurny.com/#/calendar/Date20090523 which is also pretty exclusive. There is also

All restaurants Stephen listed are great, I would also add Pastis french bistro, Dos Camino's and bagatelle all in the meatpacking district very near standard and gansevoort.

dos caminos is awsome!...good heads up! Yes on standard..they did do a PR stunt and hired porn models to have sex in the windows so poeple walking in high line park would see.....it worked they got tons of press. That said, its not a cheap plae, and has a lot of stars etc staying there, its a scene type of hotel.

Erik, check out this Hudson Hotel in mid-town. Half block from Columbus Circle, short cab ride to/from Broadway theaters and Times Square. The entrance may not be very fancy, but very much a 4 star once you get inside, for 3 star price. http://www.hudsonhotel.com/en-us/#/home/ One of my guest/friend from overseas stayed there and loved it.

Every time I have guests from overseas, they all want to go see ground zero, so go check that out. If you are an NBA fan, you have to see a game of the NY Knicks at THE Garden. Come back in year 2013, and you can enjoy F1 Racing accross the river.

Enjoy your trip to NY. I hope to vacation at your home country in the near future.

Thanks everyone.

I've got pictures of me and my friend of the top of WTC sometime in 92-93 I think. Surreal now, so yes I'm going to GZ.
I'm sure it's going to feel very strange.

Very good synopsis...also, be patient...make sure to give yourself enough time for travel...cabs, subways etc...and you'll have fun.

Oh and bmlee007..I'll sell you my real Tag Heuer Carrera, if you still want one:)

I live in nyc, i recommend
for hotels, the tribeca grand or soho grand for location(walking distance to Soho, chinatown, ground zero, meat packing, brooklyn bridge).. the standard hotel is very fun but the location isnt great. Not near public transportation. you'll end up taking cabs everywhere.

for restaurants, here's are my picks (they're all awesome)...any real new yorker would be impressed if you went to these:
1) babbo $$$$, (plan ahead make a reservation)
2) Minetta tavern
3) la esquina (plan ahead make a reservation)
4) momofuku noodle bar
5) raouls
6) Shake Shack
7) grimaldis pizza in brooklyn.. walk over the brooklyn bridge. Its for tourist but still very good. Should be reopened by the time you're here.

some friendly advice, stay away from chain restaurants and food in touristy areas.
also remember, nyc restaurants expect tips. 15-20% even if the service is average :)

I spend 5 days a week @ 11 hours per day, albeit in a office, but Erik since your coming in spring, walking around that time of year is wonderful. As for the standard, yes it's located very west side, on edge of meat packing district, but for shops, food, lounges, clubs and great people watching it can't be beat. Also, STK rooftop, unreal crowd, veddy purdy.

Erik,

If, and it is a big IF, but if you get your fill of NYC, you can make day trips on Amtrak to Philly or Boston, just a couple hours each way on the train. I know, not quite like the TGV, but it gets you there.

I forgot to add this to the previous list, but i guess it goes without saying...

This is a pretty good idea actually. I'd be in for sure if we can do it on the weekend, I'll schedule time off right now if there is interest.

Imagine a floor of the hotel parking garage filled with RS6s. :)
