View Full Version : Timing belt -- anyone have a list of "while you're in there" parts to replace?

I just ordered the Blau "enhanced" kit for the basic parts. I would like to at a minimum replace all of the stressed bolts while I do this. Has anyone already compiled a list of these?

Make sure to replace the rollers, bolts, and water pump too. Be prepared for a tough bolt on the water pump. There's one that goes into the water jacket and gets corroded.

Yes, already saw that thread, but thanks. I'm after what else I should have on hand. I can try to puzzle out the bolts from ETKA but was hoping someone else had already done this.

You sure it doesn't come with new bolts?

You could drill the charge pipe for meth injection nozzles !

The kit has bolts for the crank pulley (http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail.asp?prod=GH21132-1-A) but not for the tensioners, waterpump, etc. I had a tensioner bolt strip out on my 12v A6 and that was a big pain in the ass so I want to try to prevent that.

edit: actually they do show an additional bolt or two in the picture that's not in the list. I expect I'll have a trip to the parts counter once I get everything taken apart anyway. Just trying to plan ahead...

Any update on the pn's for the tensioner and water pump bolts?

When I do mine (coming up shortly) I'm going to replace the intercooler hoses with the kit from Wagner,

http://www.wagner-tuning.com/AUDI-RS6-C5-Intercooler-Upgrade-Silicone-Hose-Kit_p_45.html

and I'm trying to find a source for aluminum pulleys as well.

No need to do the pulleys. The stock ones are very strong and lightweight.

Interesting idea on the silicone hoses. Are there problems with the stock hoses failing?

I replaced the stock hoses on my Ur-S4 with Samco silicone hoses, and surprisingly I had a tear in the silicone in less time (granted, >5 years) than the original hoses lasted without failure. So I'm a little skeptical that it is a reliability improvement over good condition stock hoses. That car is running 26+ PSI of boost though, probably harder on hoses than the RS6.

Not failure, but some with higher boost setups have had issues with them popping off. The Wagner hoses are said to fit better and the lower hose is 15mm longer than the stock to prevent pulling off.

I'm also changing out the stock hose clamps to T-bolt clamps. I like the feel better.

FYI - I ordered a bunch of t-bolt clamps for this hose conversion on ebay for 2.49ea....clampco brand same as ECS sells...4 bux flat shipping too!

I had a thread about the clamp sizes, my mech said they were wrong though, you could look up my IC rebuild thread, just used normal clamps on venair hoses, no issues.

And for clamps, many will say clamps are clamps, but i have always used SS from http://www.partssystems.com/hose-clamps/t-bolt-clamps/ for all my turbo cars.

thank you very much, it says Audi of America, does that mean it is also useable for the European ones...?

i think that applies to all RS models all over the world, i've sent an email to Audi.de regarding this issue as i wasn't sure either and got different answers here from different shops including from Audi dealer, they were claiming that the belt should be changed every 90k km or 100k km but Audi.de said that it must be changed every 60k km or 3 years, whichever occurs first! However, i think the water pump can be changed every 100k km but if you're on this job anyway for a couple of hundred $ it's better to change it anyway, take the old one to Audi and exchange it for a new one and pay the difference!

i found out mine is done in 2004 at 55k km, now running at 101k km... although i havent got information its done already between 55k km and present (got the car from 96k km...), its probably time to replace it...is it possible to look at the cambelt to see if its ''fresh''...?

what year is it yours? 2002? and in 2004 had already 55k km? Anyway, if you're not sure i would do the T-belt kit including the water pump and thermostat, mine was done at 60k km and now it has 113k km and i have just done it, just for my peace of mind, though according to Audi i could've waited until 120k km!

yes its 2002...i thought it was 60k km or 4 years, but i cant find the 4 years in the maintenance schedule...

mik15
December 24th, 2011, 11:02
it's 3 years 100%....i think it also depends on how you drive the car, Audi usually recommends for 4 cyl. engines a 90k km interval and for the V-engines 120k km interval, however given that the RS's were meant to be driven harder than a regular Audi this is why they recommend 60k km interval or 3 years but i guess that if you drive it as a regular car you can exceed this interval with no problems. I am from Europe, and had back home a A6 2.5TDI Quattro and i did the T-belt according to their maintenance schedule at 120k km, this is also a V-engine and the torque it has puts a lot of stress on the parts....i got back the old parts after i did the T-belt to the RS6 and the belt doesn't look bad at all, on the contrary, i would've expect to see lots of cracks or other damage to it, but no sign of that!

ok so you did it yourself, did you made some pics for a diy on here? i probably have asked that before...

i didn't do it myself :), i wish i would've but i don't have a proper garage here...
