View Full Version : Error Code 16396

CEL came on and the scan shows:

16396 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Advance Setpoint not Reached (Over-Retarded)
P0012 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

I've cleared the code a few times. It seems the CEL will either come on at startup (or very shortly thereafter), or the light stays off during the run. The car seems to be idling and running normally. Any ideas Brain Trust?

The car will be headed back to the shop (its' natural habitat) next week.

TIA

Looks like maybe Bank 1 (Right Side) Camshaft Solenoid Adjustment Valve is either Bad or has a bad Electrical connection. Hope its as simple as that, otherwise you maybe looking at a bad Camshaft Adjuster or Cams themselves. Good Luck....................

Update- Tech is replacing the Bank 1 (passenger side) timing chain tensioner, cam seals & plugs. Audi told him it would require an engine pull to remove the passenger side valve cover. However; the indy shop owner determined how to do the R&R without pulling the engine and saved some $$$ (woo hoo!). I might have it back by the end of the week if parts arrive timely. With all this wackiness- I only rolled about 5K miles this year... 00

I realize there are some (not to mention names- Ben) on this forum that require photographic evidence...

Glad to see that the Right(Passenger) side Valve cover can be removed without Engine removal. Are there any details that you can recall on the procedure. I just replaced the Valve cover gaskets and cam and chain tensioner seals on my 2.7T, and it was really no big deal. However I have heard that the passenger side Valve cover on the 4.2T is a bitch to remove with out engine removal. Glad to see it can be done. Hope the tensioner replacement solves your issues...................................

I was also told engine removal for my right side valve cover gasket. I would love it if I could find a place that would do if for me without removing the engine.

Max, I may be having a similar issue to yours.. my valve timing adjustment is off, and when i go from idle to tip in on throttle in gear, I can hear it clack exactly when it goes from OFF to ON. Mine was also staying ON then going OFF under WOT at 4600 RPM. Yours appears to be the same, except mine was at 21-22 deg of timing change while status was ON..

I too would really like to know the procedure for RR w/o removing engine.. I may be doing this next week. Thanks!

Update- Just picked it up from the shop. It made it all the way home without the CEL burning my eyes and inner soul.

Brav:
I don't know exactly how they were able to pull the valve cover. The tech said he had to make a tool to remove a couple of parts that were blocking the valve cover. The tech was rightfully proud of himself for figuring it out. Now tell me- why in the h#ll highly paid Audi techs can't figure this stuff out?? This tech had never previously worked on a RS6. The process certainly saved me signficant bucks for this repair.

Crossed fingers that it doesn't give you more retina burning episodes. Looks like tech removed your SAI. Really considering this as it has worked out for Mark shown in his recent post.

^Thanks for the croxxed fingers and I think I'll cross my ears for extra measure.

Gonna clean the ol boy up today and then go pull a few logs. I will shoot you my MAF log as you asked the other day.

That'd be very appreciated. Thanks Randy.

That'd be very appreciated. Thanks Randy.

I have sent you an email with the log. What I do know- is the thing seems to be running very well. It made it all the way through these log pulls and still no CEL...00

The "highly paid" Audi techs get paid to TAKE YOUR ENGINE OUT TO DO STUFF. I remember saying that I thought I could get my valve cover off, but wasn't sure I could get it back on and NOT leak after.

This forum posting advises that US passengers side valve cover can be removed without pulling engine:
