It was mentioned a while back that Audi was going to replace its current 3.0-litre supercharged engine with a new turbocharged unit. This will make for a simpler, less expensive to produce engine with a comparable power output and economy.

I was just speaking to my 'Ingolstadt friend' who tells me that the development programme is nearing completion. A lot of the component technology has been lifted from the 4.0-litre TFSI including cylinder de-activation. The results should be another stunning engine.

I don't think we'll see it before the B9 A4 arrives and it'll probably go into the A6 first, but when the A4 gets it it will be used for both S4 and RS4 versions.

I don't know what outputs will be used, but I'm guessing that it will push out 350-370 bhp in the S4 (which should also be lighter than the current model) and 450-470 in the RS4.

The big story with this engine is not so much its power, but its economy. Expect to hear much more about it in the coming months.
