This may sound real dumb (I don't have a manual) but am I correct to assume that there should be a chime/reminder that stops you from leaving the lights on? This is the second day its happened. I came back from hiking Mt Washington and my parking lights were on (insert heart sinking fear) but luckily the car started just fine.

Is it possible that it was VAG'd out?

I lost my "chime". Then I had to replace my instrument display due to another issue and the "chime" returned. This doesn't address your specific question...but thought I would share.

My chime for the lights and the door being open is also gone. I think it is a sensor in the door that has to deal with the locking mechanism. When you open the drivers door do the interior lights come on and stay on?

Also as a test close your door so that it latches but not all the way. If this happens in my car the chime returns about the lights and the door being open. The sensor is loose or faulty.
