Oh, and the word from the street is that there will be a A3 2.5T with 280-300 hp and a S3 2.5T with 360HP. (No More RS3)

Can't believe for one minute that the next S3 will have 360hp or that a lesser version will get 280-300hp.

Yes, S3 gets 2.5 litre turbo with 300+ bhp. Exact bhp is unknown.

Correct but not a figure that would surpass the RS3, this suggestion would position the next S3 above the S4 in terms of outright performance by quite some margin.

Joker, yes. I think it is possible for S3 to get 300-320 bhp but not more. The final choice will be made to position S3 relative to the Golf R not the S4. It certainly won't have more power than an S4.

This is likely to be important, because it looks as though there will be an Avant version of the A3 as well as a Sportback. I guess this will all become clear in March 2012 at Geneva. BTW I understand that the supercharged 3.0 litre TFSI is being replaced with a straight turbo'd 3.0 litre V6. Can anyone tell me more about this and the rationale for it.

The next Ford Focus RS will get 380 hp and will become the most powerfull hot hatch.
The Next Generation Audi V6 TFSI engine will be a 6 cylinder version of the 4.0 V8 TFSI with power outputs of 340 and up.
There would be also be single and bi turbo versions of that engine.
I believe i read somewhere that the supercharged V6 engine would have a lifespan of ± 7 years after that it would be replaced by something new.

Percisely, the S3 will be positioned closer to the Golf R (and it's replacement) than it ever would the S4.

Yes the supercharged 3.0 is being changed to a turbo unit but it's unclear whether it will happen in the lifespan of the B8 A4, I personally doubt it will happen in the current car which makes me doubt they will give the S3 more power than the current S4.

The Focus RS is an RS equivalent, not a S model.

When the V8 is to receive two versions, a lower powered single turbo unit and a hi-powered twin turbo unit then chances are that the V6 version of this engine will also offer the same but again I doubt this will happen before the introduction of the B9.

Hope it's not turning into a disaster like the new 1er... Although that front overhang doesn't help much!

Yep, "Euro NCAP" is not in favor of the design.

It is going to be very interesting to see how the next A3 compares to Mercedes-Benz's new A-Class.

I know we were told the design was going to be evolutionary and not revolutionary but damn that side profile is identical, it's the 911 all over again where you almost need to use a ruler to spot the difference.

The only really noticable difference I see is the headlight design which follows the move started with the A7 and has continued down the line.

i think that the sedan will be the most interesting version of the new A3. there is only so much you can do with a rear hatchback.

Apparently, the new A3 will come with two wheelbases. A short wheelbase version will be used for this, the hatch / coupe and sportback, while the sedan and avant versions will use a longer wheelbase. I have no idea whether this is just a rumour or fact. The current A3 is a very good car with an excellent range of engines - probably the best range of engines available in any compact model. I like the existing design, but absolutely love the design of the new Audi A1. It is very attractive. The new A3 will clearly echo the new A1 as the A3 sedan concept showed earlier this year. I think the new A3 will be great.
