Next-generation Beetle drops the 'New' from its name but comes with a design update meant to keep the retro-styled model relevant

This is the next-generation 2012 VW Beetle, which has now dropped the capitalized word 'New' from its name.
The next Beetle model will be making its official debut soon at the Auto Shanghai show and then later at the New York auto show this week.
The 2012 VW Beetle differs in styling from the previous generation with a flatter roof and more upright back end. The new Beetle is also wider than its predecessor by 3.3 inches (8.4 cm) and longer by 6 inches (15.2 cm).
Engine options will include the 2.0 liter TFSI engine and the 2.0 liter TDI diesel in both European and North American spec variants.
The North American Beetle still gets the 2.5 liter as an entry-level (http://www.worldcarfans.com/111041832684/2012-volkswagen-beetle-revealed#) option with 170 bhp (127 kW / 172 PS) and 177 lb-ft (240 Nm) of torque.
VW will offer various performance packages to make the 2012 Beetle as sporty as ever, including 19-inch wheels and a rear spoiler as seen in the photos here.

in other news, ingolstadt has still not received reports by its search teams in antarctica, eastern australia, the sahara, and the gobi about the whereabouts of the V8T engine. every day hope fades. the halls are quiet and dim in ingolstadt and the VWAG headquarters in wolfsburg.

Don't know, though I would have thought that with the press release this very important bit of info would have been included, don't you think? :brag:

If that were the case then the old saying of two wrongs making a right is indeed true because this is decidedly better looking than either of them.

On Monday, the New York Auto Show featured the new Beetle pattern by VW. The 2012 model redesign will hit showrooms come Oct, and according to AOL Autos, a price has yet to be declared. This can be only the third version of the German working-class subcompact vehicle in its 90-year history. The new Volkswagen Beetle makes it debut at the New York Auto Show (http://www.cardealexpert.com/news-information/auto-news/new-beetle-new-york-auto-show/) would make men and women love it. It has nice evolutionary styling. 2.0 Liter gasoline turbo with manual 5 sp tranny will be fun and sporty. :)

How proud Adolf would be to see his creation reborn in a third generation model. Personally, I don't see the point at all. Why have a car like this when a Golf or Polo is more attractive, more practical and more contemporary?

If I had been in charge of creating a modern interpretation of the Beetle, I would have put the engine in the back driving the rear wheels. I'd have made it overtly sporting with more power, exclusive engines, and used exotic materials to reduce weight. And I'd charge a massive premium for it. Oh, hang on. Such a car already exists: the Porsche 911.
